Parents at DCI feeders aren’t gambling. They have more options than most parents. I am at one of the feeders and I always knew that DCI wasn’t guaranteed. We played the lottery for 5th and got into BASIS. Other parents played too and didn't get into BASIS or Latin, so they will try for DCI next year. These parents are in a better position than parents with Latin or BASIS as there only options. |

So if i follow coreectly, at this point the acceptable charter middle/high schools are both Latins, Basis (sort of), DCI, Inspired (ms only), Truth (sort of, and hs is brand new). No one has locked in feeder rights now that DCI feeders are large.
So everyone's in the same boat, with DCI feeders having a leg up but no longer guaranteed. What a mess. |
Agreed. What happens to all of those kids when the leg up doesn’t work out? Maybe some have an acceptable IB middle school, but most of the families we know are IB for MacFarland or Brookland middle school. If they have a bad enough number to get waitlisted at DCI, is SH, EH, or any of the other “middle tier”schools an option? |
The elementary schools are very aware of DCI’s enrollment constraints. They expanded after DCI told the middle school would not match the moves. But most charters have to expand enrollment to continue being viable. So it’s a no-win situation for the elementaries. |
I've known people to switch to Oyster in upper elementary for this reason. And some are IB for SH. Some have a sibling at ITDS or Truth for whatever reason. Some I've known have separated parents and two legitimate addresses. And some are IB for Deal. |
The same that will happen to every kid in the city with a mediocre middle school. |
| DCI is essentially guaranteed for everything but Spanish, even with increased enrollment. |
So, guaranteed for.....stokes french and yu ying? |
EL Haynes is not frequently mentioned on this board but it is a very solid school, particularly for elementary. We only were there through first, but that was a few years longer than we had intended on staying in DC and it was largely because every years at Haynes we were surprised by how great it was. Really solid, steady administration and good teachers across the board. Particularly strong arts, music, and dance. |
For YY, yes as of now. The consequences of the expansion won't be felt for another few years. And there are always ~10 or so students who peel off after 4th grade for BASIS and Latin--though that won't be enough to guarantee spots for the years impacted by YY's expansion. I think the oldest of those kids are only in K now, though I might be wrong about that. |
I agree with this. It's a good position to be in. My kids were at a DCI feeder and even though they had guaranteed spots from their feeder, we were never sold on DCI. DCI would've been an ok backup if we really didn't have any other options, but it was still an option that a lot of parents don't have going into the lottery. |
I modeled it out, even with expansion it’s like 20 surplus kids they’re accepting. Given they don’t backfill after 1st, that’s 7 kids leaving a year. Is it a risk? Yes, but a pretty small one. |
I thought they added 2 new classes in Pk 3 and 4 at the new campus. If so that’s more than 20 kids per grade. Admittedly I could be wrong—my youngest is in 3rd and the expansion doesn’t affect us so I haven’t been super focused on it. |
Any insight into what’s happening between the MV campuses? I assume C8 is increasing or maintaining demand in part because of the new ECE building. Are people who would have previously gone to Cook now opting to commute to C8? MV |
If you include equitable access it’s like 30 kids, but they attrit at 10 kids or so a year if you look at the backfill numbers. YY has never filled their charter quota at DCI. I think that will change, but we’re talking 5-10 on the wait list. There’s some risk there, but at least to me it’s an acceptable risk. |
