“Target is not an ‘everything store,’” Says CEO , “That’s not what guests want from us.”

Walmart tends to have a broader selection, with higher quality and better prices. Target tends to be trendier.

What worked for Target was getting MC and UMC women into the stores "for essentials" and then they'd buy those essentials and while they were there, they'd also wander the aisles, Starbucks in hand, and buy a random throw pillow and a travel mug and a sundress and... there were so many memes about this is the "Tarzhay" days.

But now everybody is cutting back on random spending, even those with disposable income. This coupled with the decrease in quality (which is happening across all but the highest of high end brands) mean people don't feel like shopping at Target anymore. Might as well stay home and order online or grab your essentials at Walmart to save a few bucks.

Mainly I was concerned about straight men who are predators who now could use this as an excuse to loiter where women are in vulnerable positions. I don't need that for myself or my daughter when we just want to buy some socks and bath towels.

Then a few years ago, Target offended the opposite side when they announced they were backing off DEI.

They shouldn't have done either announcement, because they ended up annoying a huge percentage of their loyal shoppers.

I shop there once in awhile when I can't find something elsewhere, and it is a pleasant environment with carts that roll smoothly and nice lighting. But now it's a few times a year instead of once a week.

And I'm left leaning, so I also don't frequent Hobby Lobby because I don't want to give my business to religious companies who are against birth control and gay people.

Shopping didn't use to be so political.

Oh for heaven's sake.

The transphobes shop at Walmart and always have.

Those of us who don't check out other people's genitalia in the restroom went to Target until Target made a big show of how anti-DEI it would be henceforth.

And I haven't shopped there since.

Okay, have read through this whole thread and confirmed that Target hasn't changed anything with its business model.

It's flip flopped on DEI, which has pissed people off.

And otherwise, most of you just don't like it because you're not 28 years old anymore.

Pretty much. Because I don't believe the same people have been buying baby and kid clothes for 20 years. Haven't those kids grown up yet?

They're grasping.
A CFO can never be a CEO, from a skills and strength perspective. At the end of day, Target casted a pallor on itself that the folks they decided to kowtow to, can't make up in sales.

IYKYK. Atonement is the only way to turn their tide.

Genius. I guess Urban Outfitters hasn't changed anything with its business model but I don't go there anymore either.

I can't stand Walmart but I guess I'll have to shop there if Target doesn't carry everything. My Walmart checks your bags and receipts on the way out and it just makes me irrationally angry. Walmart also has huge gaps and is often out of stock of what I need. Ever since covid they just dont' stock well.

Yes, RIP Merona!

Amen! Loved their thin cardigans in so.many.colors.

+1 The home decor has always given “decorating my first big girl apartment on a budget” and the clothes have always skewed young and trendy. Even the Merona line was very “need business casual for my first big girl office job.”

I do Walmart + home delivery and never step foot in the store. At least where I am they are rarely out of anything.

This. I'd rather just go to Walmart because it's just no nonsense about what it is.

The company is trying to bring back what’s worked in the past: selling affordable, trendy fashion and furnishings that helped it earn its “Tarzhay” reputation.

Unlike Walmart, which is known for the best prices, or Amazon, which has stood out with convenience, Target wants to create a fun, treasure hunt atmosphere in stores where shoppers come in to find what’s new.

“Target is not an everything store,” said Fiddelke, who took over as Target’s chief executive last month. He said Target would focus on winning “busy families” as its primary customer base.

This makes no sense. Anyone who is busy, especially parents shopping with kids, is not looking to treasure hunt! What a misread. It makes no sense at all.

I'm not going to go to Walmart to stick it to Target. It's too big, too spread out full of crap I don't need, and it's further from my house.

I stopped shopping with them hears ago. Their clothing went way down and prices much higher than walmart. Walmart delivery is so easy.
