My kids are fine. But I’ve seen many of their peers get pushed into higher math too soon and end up miserable. There is no benefit for most kids to take more than one year of calculus in HS. Over acceleration is just one aspect to the race to nowhere. It’s toxic. |
That's not acute thing to say. I'm sorry you had so much trouble learning anything despite taking so many extra classes. |
Only 40% of young adults in India graduated high school. Of course you can have a "higher standard" for school when most of the country isn't even in school! https://gpseducation.oecd.org/CountryProfile?primaryCountry=IND&treshold=5&topic=EO |
Math is a race to nowhere. My kid should be admitted to a selective college because he runs track. That's a race to somewhere! |
According to Google, public schools in a third world country spend as little as $50 per student per year, yet still manage to offer all students the opportunity to learn calculus by 12th grade. In contrast, FCPS spends around $20,000 per student annually, but still struggles to keep pace with those countries in teaching even basic math. Does this have anything to do with Equitable Math? https://www.noahpinion.blog/p/refusing-to-teach-kids-math-will |
Oh look. Racist poster loves toxic culture. Shocker. |
Once again, 60% of kids not graduating high school means that not "all kids" are learning or even studying the subjects. |
Racist as in someone who doesn't like racing? |
Don’t all students in the US have the opportunity to learn calculus by 12th grade? Where is the data comparing math abilities of all kids in India (not just those lucky enough to stay in school) vs. all kids in the US? |
Calculus is so hard to learn especially in high school years. Why do they let advanced students take AP Calculus BC, multivariable, and all those complicated courses, and make other kids feel inadequate? |
That some parents are toxic and push their kids beyond their level is not a reason to limit acceleration for everyone else. This still isn't an issue with an acceleration, just with these parents. |
I’m glad your kids are fine. Mine likewise were fine with taking AP Calc BC in 11th and 9th respectively. The kids, teachers, parents and test scores all supported these paths. The only toxic attitude is yours, since you think your opinion is more valuable than the test scores, teachers, parents, and kids. |
The loudest voices against acceleration are those with kids who couldn’t qualify for 7th grade algebra. Holding other kids back makes their kid look comparatively stronger. They’ve never had a kid bored out of their mind in math class, so they don’t understand the need to accelerate |
Entire US population is 340 million. There are more than that number of illiterate people in India, earning less than $2 a day. And you want to compare math abilities of ALL kids in India with those in US? |
If you want to compare the two educational systems, then yes. You can’t just cherry pick the kids who happen to stay in school in India vs all kids in the US. |
