So how many of you emailed the principal about this? How many of you went to the event? How many of you protested the event? What was the result?

Is this sarcastic? Aren't they being dismantled?

Do you get emails for other communal activities that take place in FCPS?
I don't; not even school sanctioned ones (during or after school hours).

So what makes this group so "special" that FCPS is their PR rep?

Not just FCPS. American youth are their PR reps!

Fairfax, Virginia:

UPDATE: I heard back from the superintendent and she has shared with me that the event has now been cancelled. Official communication from FCPS is forthcoming.

Frost Middle School is hosting an Iftar dinner on March 27. Below is the announcement of the event in the Frost newsletter. I have already contacted the superintendent with my concerns, and encourage you to do so as well.

Namely:

1. Frost Middle School's characterizes Iftar as a "celebration of unity, cultural respect, and the values that make us ethical global citizens." While that's a lot of word salad, Iftar is actually the meal that ends the fast each day of Ramadan. Ramadan is the month when the Qur'an was revealed to Muhammad. It is a religious observance not a meal celebrating "ethical global citizens."

2. Frost will also be hosting a Magrib prayer which is the prayer said before Iftar. The Magrib prayer includes the first Surah (chapter) of the Qur'an:

"Guide us (O Allah) to the path that is straight,

The path of those You have blessed,

Not of those who have earned Your anger,

nor those who have gone astray." (Al-Quran, trans. Ahmed Ali).

3. According to Muslim scholars, those who "anger" and those who have gone "astray" are the Jews and the Christians. This is the prayer that Frost Middle School is advertising as part of their "unity" Iftar celebration.

4. A public school system is hosting, and thereby endorsing, a religious observance.

In your polite, but firm, letters to Dr. Reid (mcreid@fcps.edu) and the Frost Principal Anthony Harris (APHarris@fcps.edu) please ask what the FCPS approval process is for schools endorsing religious observance.

I want to be clear: there's a major difference between tolerance of different religions and a public school supporting and endorsing any religious observance.

As long as it is not Christian, it’s fine.

Dear Frost families,

I am writing to inform you that the Iftar dinner, previously scheduled for Thursday, March 27, 2024, has been cancelled.

The event was scheduled with the intention of creating an inclusive school community gathering. However, the nature of the event is too closely connected to one religious group, and FCPS does not sponsor or endorse any religious groups or gatherings.

I am committed to ensuring that all students and families feel valued and represented. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me directly with any questions.

Thank you for your understanding.

Sincerely,

Anthony Harris

Principal

OP here.
There are 2 cases.
A. This was organized from a rogue teacher without principal approval
B. The principal approved it in the name of "inclusion", however he is so naive to understand that this would inevitably produce backlash for the reasons he was forced to admit.

I agree with schools not hosting religious events. However, your 3rd point is incorrect. Stop spreading hate and islamophobia.

We're sorry, we just don't pay attention. We don't know what's going on, and we don't think much about it.
