Do a lot of "W" kids go to UMD or do they use it as a "safety?"

Maybe UMD are utilizing historical yield rates from the W svhools. Maybe it's a MoCo thing.

At our W school, lots of kids attend UMD. Given that not everyone applies and of those who do, some are rejected, I’d say it’s a pretty good yield. But they don’t yield protect so it’s a moot point. My 2 kids applied, were accepted and attended. Although there’s a belief everyone in W schools has money, we could only afford in-state like many parents. The issue here is that UMD doesn’t want to take the majority of their incoming class from a handful of schools so students are compared to their classmates and not necessarily a student across the county or in Baltimore or southern MD. The stats of admitted kids vary from school to school. Going to a more academically competitive school hurts.

W school admit here, and DD will be attending UMD. We would not be able to afford OOS.

And oddly if kid lived in VA or NC with 4.6 to 4.8 GPA they get into UMD.

Is what it is.

They're 2 different grading systems. MCPS weights honors and AP and advanced with full point. VA schools do not so max weighted is lower. MCPS 4.8 is unlikely to be rejected from UMD, but 4.6 is not that high. You can't compare weighted grades. It's a mistake to think in terms of weighted GPA (except when considering MCPS and UMD). For the most part, people should look at UW and factor in rigor if you want to compare across counties or states.

+1. 4.6 is about as high as you can go in the top FCPS high schools.

Yup, agree with this and the post that notes the weighting grading systems are different in MCPS compared to VA. A 4.6, for example, is not that great from a W school —compared to peers at that same high-performing school. Grade inflation in MCPS means it’s not particularly hard to have all As. And it’s not that hard to have practically all your classes weighted, given that both honors and AP get the same weight and many classes are “honors for all”— meaning everyone in the school is taking the same 9th grade English class and getting weighted credit for it. What this means at the Blair magnet is that a huge number of kids have a 4.0 unweighted and 5.0 weighted GPA (until they take gym). And as long as they have good everything else, they all get into UMD because the school doesn’t yield protect. I say this not to denigrate kids with a 4.6 as unqualified, but just so people can understand there are nuances across school systems as to what is truly high stats and high rigor.

Does anyone know what UMD does for admitted student days? Will there be some soon? Kid accepted and have not yet visited. Trying to see if we can go quickly to rule it in or out.

Does anyone know what happens if an Honors College kid doesn't get the program they want? I assume some (aka STEM) are more popular than others. I guess then does University Honors, which sounds like more of a catch-all? I hate how unclear the info and process is.

I don't believe that. My kid is in magnet with similar scores engineering and got scholars (slightly higher SAT 1520)

Maybe your kid wrote better essays and had stronger LORs. Engineering is extremely competitive. Plenty of high stats kids rejected. They might not have liked the 33 ACT, with so many 35s in the mix.

FCPS admitted for spring 3.7/4.1, 1510 (yes we know this looks low but kid has ADHD and is terrible at languages - language class grades really brought down their GPA and it shows). We are waiting for VT (did not apply to UVA or WM as don't have the kid's major). Not sure freshman connection is worth it if if have a lot of AP and DE credits to transfer. Does anyone know how UMD is with respect to that? TIA

Kid already has a number of OOS acceptances with great merit, so we are really not sure what to do.

So denied to engineering but admitted to UMD general studies, right? So could do math or physics? For my high stat kid, who did get Engineering honors but with a higher SAT, I considered UMD a safety overall but wasn’t sure about computer engineering.

Congrats to all the admits! Heading to a world-class university with a beautiful campus and great school spirit.

You don't need admitted student days to visit. Good luck with your quick decision.
