Do a lot of "W" kids go to UMD or do they use it as a "safety?"

At our W school, lots of kids attend UMD. Given that not everyone applies and of those who do, some are rejected, I’d say it’s a pretty good yield. But they don’t yield protect so it’s a moot point. My 2 kids applied, were accepted and attended. Although there’s a belief everyone in W schools has money, we could only afford in-state like many parents. The issue here is that UMD doesn’t want to take the majority of their incoming class from a handful of schools so students are compared to their classmates and not necessarily a student across the county or in Baltimore or southern MD. The stats of admitted kids vary from school to school. Going to a more academically competitive school hurts. [/quote]
