Hamas doesnt care about the tiny Gaza strip. What they really want is to gain favor in the West Bank. Hamas is outlawed/banned in the West Bank by the Palestinian Authority, their rival political party, That's the war Israel is really fearing because there's no demarcation over there especially in Jerusalem and there are tons of settlements and we know Israel isnt great at ground war. Most of these prisoners are from the West Bank, many are women and children and the Palestinian Authority did nothing to help the families get their relatives back over the years. If Hamas can do that, they may lose Gaza forever but win the WB and that would be a nightmare for Israel. Israeli intelligence stupidly thought Hamas and the PLO would go to war and be divided and conquered but Hamas' plan was to topple the PLO and Israel together by using WB public already angered at settlements |
