Stanford REA

DD was accepted into Stanford REA on Friday. No merit or financial aid of any kind. Also was accepted today to George Mason University, in-state, full-tuition merit scholarship. This was her safety affordable option. Stanford was the stretch.

Which one to choose for a B.S. in Computer Science? The Stanford route is going to cost about $300K more over four years. Is the degree really worth that much more? DH votes for George Mason and to use the savings (including $245K 529) to pay for law school. She is planning to pursue Intellectual Property Law with a STEM B.S.

Stanford will be such a drastically different experience. If she wants to go to Stanford, I'd support it. Much easier to get into a top tier law school from Stanford.

If she wants to stay close to home and likes to save money, then pick George Mason.

I am no Stanford fan, but for CS I would always choose Stanford. Congratulations, you've won the lottery. You'd be insane to choose George Mason for CS over Stanford. Why did you even apply? The very top CS students on the entire planet would give anything for an opportunity to study at Stanford. And you're throwing that away for George Mason?

I can't even. That's enough internet for me today.

Have her kick butt at George Mason, get into a T14 law school. Unless bragging right is worth $300,000 to her (it will be more due to flights)

I agree. That poster must be CRAZY or an idiot. Why bother with the lottery at all?
What an idiot.

There's a giant difference btw a T5 school (and Stanford for CS no less) and George Mason. In every aspect of the educational experience - inside and outside the classroom.
If you don't see that, well nothing here matters.

“Have her kick butt” lol. There are no guarantees. Students have bad semesters, and the other merit students may beat her out for the very top slots.

The Stanford admit was a lucky break for your DD. Turn. It down if you like, but don’t expect “Stanford for grad school.”

That Stanford CS kid could work in VC for a year or two and use her bonus to pay for law school three times over.

The entire logic of rejecting Stanford CS to go to George Mason to save a few dollars for law school is... blowing...my mind.

Stanford. I’m super practical but this is a no brained whether she ends up at law school or not.

+1 Stanford Law School is one of the best in the world, especially for Intellectual Property Law. Rock on at George Mason as a University Scholar and just go to Stanford Law School upon graduation. The $300K savings would put a huge dent in that law school bill. If DD is good enough to get into Stanford for a B.S. in computer science, she is sure to be good enough to get in four years from now for a J.D.

DC's friend too. Finalist for the largest science competition in America (you know the one...) + math awards + published research (and not the BS kind) + 1590 + 96 UW GPA with top rigor. Rejected. What else is there??

Legacy connection..

Exactly. You have prestige chasers clouding their judgment. Firms hire from law school. They don't care about undergrad. At all.

except with a CS degree from Stanford, you don't need to go to law school.
How many kids change their mind!!
