My kid got into an ivy with something similar to the blacksmith extracurricular. Obviously had the grades and the scores to meet the baseline.

You guys are all missing the point.

Sounds super contrived to me. The 'unique' interests, passion projects, etc. almost seem comical and trite. Rarely genuine. Do admissions people really believe it or see through this stuff? I know a kid who, at the recommendation of a private counselor, spent years cultivating a niche environmental science topic with 'published research' for their college profile. The counselor created the plan and they were coached on the entire process. - but it worked because they are now at Duke! Just makes me skeptical when I hear things like this...

Sorry your kid was rejected.

They are like Rhodes - they demand scholar and national level athletes

No skin in this game...just reacting to the trends. Finding it both entertaining and ridiculous

True. And entrepreneurs or humanitarians on a mission.

All the quiz bowl & Olympiad kids (with 35/36 or 1580+) were rejected or deferred today from their REAs at our private. Too one-dimensional nerdy.

This is such a boring "gotcha." People can comment on the admissions system without being policed too.

I am sorry but for those going negative on the blacksmith kid, 1. That’s interesting and 2. They have patents and a product. I like robotics too but lotta that going around

When will colleges discover that it is very easy to get a patent and not af all unique. A decade ago, JHU was flexing about their patent making students and as an engineer, it reads as uninformed gimmick that’s upheld by admissions.

Stanford is one of the hardest admits for a math/science-focused kid. He would've had much better odds applying to Yale.

But then you're doing math and science...at Yale.

My DS knows several kids who SCEAed to Stanford. All total superstars, only one got in this round. His reaction: “They took the right kid. She’s gonna change the world.”

DC's friend too. Finalist for the largest science competition in America (you know the one...) + math awards + published research (and not the BS kind) + 1590 + 96 UW GPA with top rigor. Rejected. What else is there??

Personality.
