Crazy NYT article on the lab leak theory for COVID

Sure.
Now.
It sure didn’t then
Dickheads just used it as an excuse to beat up Asian people.
And you know it.

dp.. I'm Asian American. I suspected it could be a lab leak, but the vitriol by Trump and his team towards the Chlna virus (and I'm not even Chinese) was causing hate crimes against Asian Americans. A lot of the people who support Trump are racist, and constantly pointing fingers at another race just fueled their racism. There were covid patients who yelled at Asian American doctors for bringing in the virus.

That is why the rhetoric needed to be toned down. It was not helping.

When we had the MERs virus, we did not have a POTUS who constantly pointed fingers. There weren't people screaming at ME looking people about bringing in the virus (at least not to the degree we had during Trump's term).

Lab leaks happen. But, the question is, how is China (or any entity) going to ensure this doesn't ever happen again. And how will China be held accountable? Russia isn't going to support holding China accountable, and too many economies rely on Chinese exports.

When were people you categorize as "liberals" gaslighting in regards to this matter? How can you RWNJs and LWNJs turn everything into an "us" vs "them" issue? This ignorance is getting old to the normal people.
Wait. Are you pretending that Democrats (and I am one) didn't use someone's beliefs on Covid's origins as a ideological purity test? Last night on The Daily Show, John Stewart again referenced his June 2021 appearance on Colbert after which he was blasted by the left for daring to say that COVID came from a lab.

The issue with liberal politicians and press/media mocking the lab theories and dismissing them as conspiracies is that it erodes public trust in both politicians and the media. Who can you believe when you are being mocked for something that turned out to be correct? It might not be a big deal per se whether it came from a lab or not, but the consequences of these small lies are long-lasting and great.

All this destroyed trust in institutions and frayed the public cohesion.

Please explain how speculating on the origins of the virus helped Americans in spring of 2020.
Did if affect developing treatments?
Did it help us getting a handle on testing and tracing?

Is there some rule that you can only think about one thing at a time? Do you frequently shut down thoughts or conversation that doesn't address the objective an inch from your face?

People process information differently. Present minded people are task-oriented, practical, solve the immediate problem types. The past can't be changed so it doesn't matter and the future has too many variables for them.

Past-oriented people are methodical, relentless, detail-oriented and dig into all the facts to understand why something occurred. If you don't understand history, you are doomed to repeat it.

Future oriented people are good at speculation of current situations and imagining possible outcomes of different paths.

There is value to all approaches. There is no reason we couldn't both investigate amd speculate about the origin of the virus that upended our society AND have people focused on the practical tasks of developing treatments.

Please explain how we were going to investigate.
Our opportunity disappeared when we dismissed our team. Our opportunity excited BEFORE the pandemic, not after.
Afterward was just finger pointing and distraction.

This, and all the yo-yoing about masks, and the 100% effective stuff and then people wonder why no one trusts the experts anymore.

Well, I'm a Dem and I've been 90% sure Covid-19 came from lab leak since I researched in the spring of 2020. I'm sure there are many Dems and Republicans that are confident Covid didn't come from a lab leak. We're all entitled to our opinions. Stop painting everyone with one brush just because they registered to vote with a certain party. You have to separate the American people from our awful politicians and political parties. Most of us aren't the lunatics our politicians would have you believe we are.

The problem is we were/are drowning in misinformation and disinformation. There is no standard on how to deal with it. The media (right and left) just feed stories to anger their audience because it gets the viewers.

Maybe if republicans didn’t scream “China!” and “government bad!” ALL the time for EVERYTHING , people would take their criticism more seriously.

They were being mocked for pushing a theory based on zero evidence.

Agree with this. I honestly have no idea who believes what on the lab leak theory because regardless of the pro/con stance I would change the channel. I literally DGAF about the origin story of Covid because China sucks and we can’t take the pee out of the pool now.

Gullible audiences are fed the mis and dis information primarily to divide the American people. The more divided we are into two specific groups, the more easily it is for the rich and powerful to maintain status quo. They have us right where they want us.
