Was my handyman going to burglarize my home?

I trust no one, especially stranger men who do work in or around my home. Watch them like a hawk and let them know you are not the one to play with.

I never let workers inside my house to use the bathroom. That is their problem.

When I have workers inside my home, I close all upstairs doors and do random walk-bys pretty frequently, so they know they’re being watched. I also make sure I get their names and a really good look at them incase anything nefarious goes down.

+1 I make sure everything is put away, such as jewelry, keys, laptops, medication, etc. Make sure nothing is sitting out by the front door either. It's too easy to grab a set of keys or something off a console in the foyer and they'll be in and out a lot. All interior doors are closed and I tell them which bathroom to use. That bathroom has nothing personal in it. Just toilet paper, soap, and a towel.

It's harder if you're having renovations done as opposed to a day or two of work. You can't stay in hawk mode for three months. I get multiple references and ask if they trust the contractor to be alone in their house. I ask a bunch of other seemingly obvious questions too because some people like to recommend contractors even if there are problems.

Car was in the garage.

Who parks their car inside when they are just there to meet someone?

The story seems fake, but it did bring awareness, so you get 1 free pass for trolling OP

OP, yes, your handyman was either going to burglarize your house or wire it to record you. So, yes, smart of you to keep an eye.

This thread makes me want to switch careers and become a handyman fill-time. Just so I can overcharge people like the mean-spirited paranoid ones here, saying this guy was going to rob them. It’s what you desperately deserve.

It was really upsetting. No idea if he knocked first, but I would assume he checked. They were not home, thankfully. They didn’t follow up but they found the window unlocked and they never leave it like that. And he was the only other person in the house the previous few days.

How do they know it was the handyman that robbed them?

No she was taken by a homeless mentally ill drifter who was approached by her father and given some handy man type jobs as a kindness . He was not a handyman.

I do. I never use the front door because then I need to get out a key but I will leave the house door to the garage unlocked and close the garage door.

Everyone I know would park their car in their garage regardless of the reason for the visit--that's what it's for!

Here's a teaching moment, stay on topic.

Yes, he was definitely not telling the truth since there was no missed call and no reason for him to be there. He was casing the house since he knew it was vacant. He knocked to see if anyone was there. When you answered, he made up his lame excuse. Have security alarm installed ASAP.
