Why do people think it's ok to put your window shade down on the plane?

Do you friggin realize how high up you are in the atmosphere? How much more intense the sun's rays are at those altitudes? The reason you close the shades, idiots, is because not only a) can it be hot AF, b) it is blinding as hell for everyone around you during a flight.

Shades up during take off and landing? Fine. All other times, 100% closed. I can't believe how stupid some travelers are who leave the shades up when your 10s of thousands of feet high in the air and the temperature is rising because of how intense the sun's rays are they are coming in . Stupid dumb people who do that should be thrown outta the damn plane.

Yikes. Someone hit a nerve. You sound like a peach.

All the window seats were taken-- my preference is window seat. When I AM in my preferred seat I politely ask the middle and aisle person if they would like to take in the view or prefer for it to be obscured. Personally, I love the view from that angle. How often can you see such a huge view of The Rocky Mountains from the air? This time, I was in the aisle seat and the window person had it closed the entire time, watching sitcoms on her tablet. Why BOTHER requesting a window seat when you have no intention of looking out the window?!?

It's a medical thing for me. I book the window seat so I can pull the shade and not get a light triggered migraine.

I feel confident that you have other ways of dealing with your migraines than commandeering the window shade. How do you deal with bright light every day?

DP: This happens to me too. I keep the shades down in the house and wear sunglasses outside every day. For me it is worse if I glance from artificial to bright natural light (especially overcast or cloudy light), so it is worse on a plane than in a house. When it happens I am partially blinded for about 20 minutes (ocular migraine).

You can and should get her medicine for that. Stop making your child suffer.

Says the person who doesn't have motion sickness.

I don't mind the shades down. I use eyemask to block the glare of the sun.

Are you 22 years old? You sound 22 years old. The window belongs to the person sitting next to it. Pay for a window seat or shut up, whiny little baby.

+1
If you want control the window get the window seat. If you want more leg room, aisle. If you need to help 2 kids the middle. Everyone knows this; common knowledge.

This. Window shade rights belong to the person in the window seat.

That said, I don't know why people book the window seat if they don't want to look out the window. I keep it open.

I like the lean my head against it and sleep.

No, I'd prefer you take the window seat and take control of your condition. I too have conditions that I don't make other people's problems - I solve them like a mature adult.

Yep, all of this.

But otherwise, the window belongs to everyone in the row. I've had this happen so many times recently and you don't even know when you're landing. It's soooooooo selfish!

Don't assume negatively. Lots of people have light, sun and/or stimulus sensitivity and closing the shade makes it tolerable for them.

+1 book it next time OP. Just like the elbow and leg room in the aisle seat does not belong to all.

DP but I get motion sickness and I will never get on a plane again taking Dramamine every 4 hours. SO not worth it. Medicate your poor child!
