Latin - diversity

Lowell school posts on the shepherd park listserv and invites community to its book fair, fall and spring fairs etc. Also informs community of upcoming events at Lowell that might draw the attention of the community. This is posted by their communications and marketing director. Not sure if Latin does the same but some of the posts here doesn’t make it seem that way.

What does Latin do for its neighbors and community?

Has well-behaved students that aren’t a nuisance to neighbors. They pass my block daily. Would that other schools followed suit.

But it also brings an energy to what was a blighted block.

Years ago when we had a kid at Latin, there were some complaints about rowdy teen behavior at the bus stop in front of the CVS. Latin stationed faculty/staff at the bus stop for the first hour after school ended to reinforce behavioral expectations. Latin does a lot of character education---grounded in classical education---about one's civic duty to society and its functioning. I really liked that aspect of the school culture.

Arguments about transportation, knowledge of lottery etc really wouldn’t apply since all these schools are very close to each other.

We've found the world's dumbest poster.

"Why does this school that no white kids apply for not have the same demographics as Latin?"

Your neighborhood? I’m sorry, those kids have every right to be there. It’s not their job to contribute to your community, they’re kids. Going to school is their contribution.

What a stupid post. What do you contribute, since I guess you’re my neighbor?

You don’t seem very kind. You came on here to shitpost vague accusations about Latin that aren’t true.

Latin keeps its green space open and accessible to the entire community - which is more than a lot of DCPS and DCPCS do. Also plenty of theater performances and other activities are clearly advertised by posters around the school, which you should know since you spend your time walking around the school. Lowell is a private school with a private school budget and (by your account) has a "communications and marketing director." I am very comfortable with the fact that Latin is not spending its time or money marketing itself to the same degree that Lowell is.

The school bus pickup locations might not be in the most convenient locations. School starts at 8:00 am. Transportation and school start time might be issues. More than likely people are not familiar with Latin. Some people are not yet comfortable with charter schools. One or two more bus school routes might be helpful but that might be too costly.

Also more discussion of what classical education is and the value of taking Latin could be helpful in recruiting diverse students. There needs to be more promoted than a perceived safe elite school. Latin has two good campuses. Two bad there couldn’t be another campus at the Whittle school building if DCPS doesn’t want it.

Some creepy freak scopes out kids on a playground and now the conclusion is that Latin needs a third campus and their bus schedule should mirror a hotel airport shuttle running on the half hour. Got it.
