Latin - diversity

"As a classical school, we align ourselves with the established wisdom of the ancients, particularly the cultures of Greece and Rome."

How much attention does Washington Latin pay to the established wisdom of other ancient cultures outside of the cultures of Greece and Rome?

This is one of the things that makes me hesitate to put my non-white kid into Latin. But maybe my hesitation is unwarranted?

Latin is majority non-white (barely).

How is that non-diverse?

According to OSSE’s data, only 12.5% of DC public school students—that’s DCPS and charters—identify as white:

Latins website says “the rich diversity of our staff and student body…contributes to the vibrancy of our community.” They don’t have to say this but if they do they should follow through and do outreach to everyone and not just rely on word of mouth.

It shows that Latin has the third lowest share of disadvantaged HS students in the city; only Basis and SWS are lower.

It would be interesting to see how much of it is sibling preference at Latin.

Insufferable DC folks who care more about performative nonsense than substance and education. If you want to virtue signal there are any number of failing schools in DC that wrap themselves in afro-centric and other foundations. Sure, less than 10% of the kids in those classes are at grade level, but at least the teacher will be representative while they dodge chairs and classes full of delinquents.

LOL. What is with this insecurity? It's a legitimate question.

Sensing A LOT of insecurity here for what is a legitimate question. Why would Latins demographics look more like an upper NW middle school with a neighborhood preference, when it’s a charter school that’s open to all. No other lottery based charter school has this type of demo.

Come on, BASIS is just as white, even whiter in the small HS. Hint: Ward 6 DCPS middle schools still don't enjoy strong community-buy in, partly because Eastern HS is a dead-end for UMC families.

Are there other schools that you have walked past during their recess and been really surprised by the lack of diversity at school?
