Just finished looking over a study titled Revealed Preferences in Ranking of Colleges from 2004 (almost 20 years ago). The group studied 105 colleges & universities and listed them together in order of preference from #1 to #105. Below, I separate the schools into two broad categories: National Universities and LACs (although the #30 preferred school--Furman University--falls into neither category and the same for the #82 school--Rose Hulman Inst. of Tech.)

Wrongo Bucko. Wasn't my study--just sharing the results.

I have seen Virginia rednecks use the term "Wrongo Bucko" before.

MIT/Caltech if they're insistent on engineering.

Not paying full freight over 4 years for Northwestern. Sorry.

Okay. We'll take you off the list. Thanks for the heads-up.

Never wanted to be on the Northwestern "list" in the first place.

I'm on for the others

No kidding. I think everyone understands that you have an issue with NU.

We let our kids pick their colleges. Had we needed to take a loan out for one and not another, we would have asked for an explanation why they felt the more expensive was better. If they could convincingly articulate how they would learn more at the more expensive school, we would’ve done our best to support them regardless of choice. In the end they both chose LACs but no loans were needed.

Who in their right minds would pay full freight for UPenn?

U Penn-Wharton is worth the investment.

? A lot of people. It’s a top school, I’d argue equal to or better than Yale at this point.

Hey Charlie!

What?

Take 13:29 off the list for Northwestern.

(Leafs through thick log book) Got it! No Northwestern for 13:29!

Lol I don’t have CDS in front of me but I would bet 40% of the class pays full freight.

HYPSM plus Hopkins, Cal Tech and Georgetown.

That's because we can afford any college.

As a PP said, I would never take out loans to pay for college, even the ones above.

Federal direct undergrad loans have a 5.5% interest rate for this school year and were just under 5% for last year. It isn't a terrible idea to have your kids take loans at this rate (especially if you can help with repayment). You would have almost certainly done a lot better over the last year taking loans and leaving the $$ invested in an index fund.

Some debt isn't awful, especially when your money is doing well elsewhere.

Georgetown and Hopkins over Penn and Duke? That needs explanation, the ROI on Penn and Duke are probably a decent amount better. I’m guessing proximity to home?

If you got into a few of those other schools and let Duke know, they are likely to find some $$ for you too!

Duke has always felt more southern to me than some like to admit both in terms of leadership and students. They are always looking to strengthen that old "Duke family" as President Price has said.
