Movies that don’t age well and you wouldn’t show your children

I really don’t get some of you people. Much prefer “80s values” to whatever it is that leads you all to be so joyless and annoying about virtually every facet of life.

What’s a little rape here and there? They’re just being boys

Um, the main love interest giving away his drunk girlfriend to a kid who did him a favor so the kid can rape her?

C’mon. Everyone loved Jake!

That is, quite literally, one of the things that is troubling about it. We love Jake, yet he is TERRIBLE and lets his gf get date raped! Gross.

I never took it that anything actually happened between Anthony M-H’s character and the girlfriend…it’s not like they were undressed or anything. What made the scene funny was that nothing probably did happen, but they sort of decided to believe it did and were happy about it (despite being a dorky freshman and beautiful senior). Also, of course in real life Jake should not have sent his drunk girlfriend off with AMH (though I believe he just asked him to drive her home and not to ‘rape her’); but even as a teen in the 80s I knew it was wrong and silly, which again, is partially what made it funny. I mean, a grandmother feeling up a grandchild is also wrong and ridiculous, and that is why it is funny.

Disagree. It's a classic that remains very funny and relevant.

I tried to watch it with my young adult kids and they were horrified. It’s amazing how we were socializing to overlook so much.

We turned it off after 20 minutes.

You missed the best parts!

come on this movie is a national treasure!

"i didnt get a harumph outta that guy!"

+1. I have watched it countless times, and it's a terrific satire with a great screenplay and hilarious performances.

These are classics!

Wait why cant we like Better Off Dead now?! Is One Crazy Summer out now, too???

Along with Police Academy, Porky's and Meatball's are out. Revenge of the Nerds for sure.

Man, we grew up with a lot of weird and troubling - but funny, at the time - stuff, us 80s kids.

This just reminded me of Zapped from the 80s. Does anyone remember it? Scott Baio gets superpowers and uses it to zap girls clothes off lol.

To say nothing of the fact that any teenage boy given zap powers would use them exclusively to see naked girls. Any teenage boy given invisibility would use it to see naked girls. Any teenage boy with a time machine, a robot, a genie, a magic wand, or a best friend from outer space would use it to see naked girls.

That doesn’t make the movie creepy or inappropriate.

I loved Jake when I was in middle school. Now I understand that he gave his girlfriend to a dweeb to rape. The rapey-ness makes him far less hot

I had thought Soulman would be awful but I watched again not too long ago. The message was very positive. It mocked the rich white waspy type.

That’s ridiculous. A pedophile is someone who is sexually attracted to children. She had sex with a consenting person with an adult body. And when she found out he was an actually a child, she did not have sex with him any longer.

The fact that he could not legally consent is mitigated by the fact that actual magic occurred, placing an actual child in a fully grown man’s body. It is not akin to actual cases of statutory rape.

Watch the scene again. It’s clear that he raped her. Of course, 80’s being the 80’s, she’s not feeling at all bothered and basically assures him that she probably liked it.

I mean … every generation of the last 70 years (until about 5 minutes ago) had a mantra about teens getting wasted and making bad decisions. It *was* fun.

Kids today,,, can’t drive, don’t have sex, can’t talk to another human, are scared to death of everything from the sun to the food they eat to the shows they watch, resolve every dispute or hardship through tranquillizing medication or litigation, and live at home until they’re 30.

Give me the 16 Candles kids any day.

Yeah, Soulman has black face, I guess. But the whole point was to mock that kind of thing. It had a pretty good message.

Bad News Bears has the same sort of problem. It uses forbidden language but does so in service of an inclusive message.

2 things happen in that scene:

Jake says that the only reason he doesn't "violate her 10 different ways" while she is unconscious drunk, is that he doesn't like her enough. Not even a throwaway "because she's unconscious! But even if she wasn't..." which would fit the scene and clear it up.

Then, after some innuendo, he tells horny Ted to take her in the car, have fun, and then get her home safe. It's clear from the way he talks that he doesn't exclude sex with an unconscious drunk from "safe". Even if Ted doesn't rape/sex her, it's clear that Jake was endorsing the possibility and not giving any regard to her ability to consent.

Ted's ultimate behavior was within reason if hijinx misbehavior, though his macho talk with Jake was out of line. Previously he was very polite and respectful of rejection when asking Sam to have sex. But Jake put Caroline in danger and repeatedly showed that he was fine with either him or Ted raping her, not because he was hateful, but because he didn't think it was rape.
