What do we need to do to stop mass shootings?

Really? No one should know about what actually happens here?
How will that help to know that murder never happened in ALL THESE PLACES below.

Tougher punishment on crime. We can’t keep catching and releasing.

Pack the prisons with the criminals and keep them there.

Normalize being normal. Quit acting like transgender, gay marriage, divorce, crime, etc, is behavior that should be applauded. Two parent homes with disciplined kids should be applauded

You are not only an idiot, you are dangerous.

When morality is called dangerous, and those pushing for morality are called idiots, you end up with school shootings.

I think people like you are immoral. Who is to say your definition of immorality trumps mine?

+1 That PP is hateful.

No. When people can’t see right from wrong, and moral from immoral, you have school shootings.

In Europe, out-of-wedlock births and atheism are rampant. No mass shootings.

There is a war going on there

Personally I already vote for politicians who support gun reform. I donate to Moms Demand Action and Sandy Hook Promise. I’ve written letters and signed petitions. I’ve shared info. on social media, which just leads to defriending stupid gun nuts I went to HS with down south who make brilliant claims like “well you can kill someone with a frying pan, should we outlaw those?”

But what else is there? It feels like yelling into a void at this point because our country is run by heartless zombies who care more about their NRA blood money than the lives of Americans.

This. I feel like tons of people are already signing petitions, calling out heartless politicians, sharing things on social media, donating to organizations, etc.. But nothing is getting done because politicians aren't getting it done. What is there to do at this point? It's hard for me to accept that the answer is nothing and that we're stuck with this.

Permissive red state gun laws are to blame.

Solid majority of guns in urban crime (in blue cities!) are straw purchases trafficked from.... RED STATES WITH PERMISSIVE GUN LAWS

Mass shootings are more likely, per capita (and trending up in).... RED STATES WITH PERMISSIVE GUN LAWS

1. Require gun owners to carry insurance for their guns. The deductible and price of insurance will be dependent on the insurance company and how risky they believe it is to ensure the person seeking insurance. Not having insurance would be grounds to have your guns removed. Perhaps even requiring a gun order to have a license to own it, such as a driver's license for using a car.

I really like all your ideas, but want to focus on this one and play devil's advocate a bit. If insurance becomes required for all guns, are already-owned guns subject to the requirement? If yes, how does the government go about locating all the guns out there in order to make their owners comply with the requirement? If no, would this lead to a massive surge in gun sales right before the law goes into effect?

This. Sandy Hook was a 9/11-like moment for me. I remember the horror I felt and exactly where I was when I found out.

Me too.

I broke down in tears after Sandy hook. It has taken me days to finally cry about Nashville. But here we are.

Yes, insurance is required retroactively for anyone who owns a gun. Include hunting rifle to handgun to AR-15. Perhaps some insurance companies will not want to ensure an AR-15. Good.
It will be hard to police this admittedly, but if something happens or a person is caught with a gun that is not insured I would say jail time at the minimum. Perhaps 6 months for each gun you own that was not properly permitted or insured.

2. Red flag laws in every state at the federal level.
3. A national database for red flagged violations
4. Mandatory background checks and a 5-day waiting period for all gun purchases no matter from where whether it be a distributor or a private seller
5. Steeper penalties for those selling guns without proper background checks

6. Universal mental health care. Preferably universal health care for everyone and an affordable rate
7. Better crisis response plans in places like schools, mom's churches, anywhere, large amounts of people gather.
8. Bulletproof glass being used in schools

What about recess? Any bullett proof glass there? Or in stores? Playgrounds?
A large majority of shooters had no mental health issues, no red flags, no concerns, and seemingly no guns, either. That was until they did have a mental health concern and had access to a gun. Legal access to a gun. Mental health isn't linear, it isn't comprehensive, it isn't predictable, and it isn't even the reason we have shootings. There are millions of people all over the world, here, and in your own circle that have a mental health crisis, and it's every day. They, by in large, are not a danger to others, and often not even to themselves.

Stop with the stupid arguments.

Actually: the better idea is to be able to sue and imprison the entire family of the gun shooter as enabling them to do this in the first place.

If they are held to the civil liabilities of this (kinda like how you are liable for lawsuit if someone is injured on your property)- it will change the legal system.

We are actually going to see these cases come about soon (one with the shooter who was given the assault rifle by his parents and the other by the 6 year old who shot his teacher).
When the family is liable- that’s when we will see more gun control because people won’t be able to afford insurance let alone the gun.

Things listed well eradicate these on their own, but there are a lot of commonsense measures we can take to help reduce and eliminate these from happening. Yes, we also go outside in the parks. I don't think that we can live in fear or a prison, but I think having bulletproof glass on first Lord doors and classrooms is not unreasonable

Can someone please explain why any civilian needs an AR-15 style rifle that is explicitly designed to maim? From what I understand they aren’t used for hunting bc of how much the bullets mess up the inside of an animal, rendering them inedible. There is a clear pattern of this type of weapon being used in mass shootings.

It looks like autocorrect messed up your response.

Long story short, there is not just one answer, but I think we need a multifaceted approach to get the numbers of these down. 100% for insurance and being able to sue
