What do we need to do to stop mass shootings?

We also need to improve mental health after we (let’s be honest) way-over did it with the Covid lockdown, and harmed so many kids health.

The out of control social media isn’t helping; in fact it’s making things worse.

These partial solutions are realistic and achievable.

Harden our schools, you mean make them more prison like with armored doors, bars on windows, and the like? Metal detectors where kids have to take their shoes off to go in and out of the building? Pat downs of 6 year olds?

Just wanted to make sure we understood.

I noticed you didn't say anything about making sure guns don't get into the hands children or the mentally unstable or anyone convicted of a violent act including domestic violence. Those are also realistic and achievable!

And you didn't actually post a solution for the out of control social media. What is your specific solution to that? Shut down all social media?

Are you suggesting we fund health care so that everyone who needs it can access the care they need, whether mental or physical? Totally agree with you there that universal health care is the way to go.

So they can buy more guns?

All of the above.

Reduce access to firearms.

Mental healthcare.

Rebuild the cultural institutions that used to help young people transition into adulthood (like churches).

Promote a cultural ethic of life and understand that rampant individualism within a libertarian legal framework is a recipe for radicalization of fringe groups on both sides.

A meaningful return to small l liberalism and tolerance of those we disagree with.

Politicians and activists must stop with the promotion or tacit approval of political violence.

Get fathers involved in the home life in a meaningful way.

Sadly, I don’t think any of this will be achieved.

I think this is a big part of the problem. Future shooters are inspired by the massacres they see in the media and it seems to them like an “acceptable” way to channel all of their frustration and anger. Go out in a twisted blaze of glory like all of the others. That’s why it has been happening over and over. And why these shootings were basically unheard of in the 1960s, 70s or 80s, even though guns were available back then too. It’s like a mass psychosis, and I don’t know we can stuff this genie back in the bottle. Making assault rifles much harder to get would definitely help though.

I’m the PP. I found an interesting website on this topic: https://www.dontnamethem.org/. There has been research by ASU on the social contagion of shootings.

I don’t know if they are doing it for the notoriety though. I think it is more like, “This is what you do in America if you’re mad and frustrated. I know this because it has been happening so often.” The shooters feel small and weak and the AR-15 gives them a chance to show that they are actually strong.

That’s my read on it at least.

This would work-- greed would win.

There are bipartisan bills in congress to ban TikTok.

Google it.

It’s the worst of the worst as far as SM.

Banning it is a good start.

No, please stop. These shootings happen because people have assault weapons. Civilians didn’t really have assault weapons until the 1980s. https://giffords.org/lawcenter/gun-laws/policy-areas/hardware-ammunition/assault-weapons/

Everywhere on earth has mental illness. Many places have some guns. Nowhere in the developed world that is not currently in a hot war are there so many assault rifles.

To stop mass shootings we need to end the GOP. They are the ones that will block everything. With them having any levers of power, we can’t work to expand mental health access, nor can we ban any kind of guns or start any kind of universal background check or blocking obviously mentally ill and violent people from owning guns. These are the things that can help and only one party is interested in doing any of it.

Sadly agree.

YAAAAAS

especially the last paragraph

I know that it's already illegal for felons to own a gun.

Maybe make it illegal for those with misdemeanors to own a gun. Infractions even...Jaywalking? No gun for you!

And for Christ's sake stop bumping down felony charges to misdemeanors (like in the UVA case!)

Anonymous
Not that I think any of this will actually happen but:

Gun buy backs
Stop selling ammunition
Stop selling guns
Free mental health care (counseling/therapy, free screenings, free medicine, free healthcare)
Anonymous
We all know the answer. The question is why won't we do it?
Anonymous
Suppose we restrict gun purchases to those who are not mentally ill. But what happens when that formerly healthy person becomes mentally ill a year later and still has that gun?

And do you also ban gun purchases by anybody who shares a residence with somebody who is mentally ill (like the Sandy Hook shooter)?

The only real solution is fewer guns.
