School Calendar 2023-2024

Omeish finally said something I agree with, that everyone wanted 2 weeks but also wanted late start and early finish. Why don't they realize no one wants this long spread out calendar??!!!!!

Yeah, there is not a consensus between the versions.

I find the 5-day week argument a bit arbitrary. For example, in January there are going to be two days off - MLK Day and a Q2 end TW. Whether it is a 3-day week and a 5-day week vs two 4-day weeks makes little difference to me.

I had originally guessed they would approve blue saying I thought it kind of split the baby and then had to explain the expression split the baby to my friend

This is only because they dropped two days off in November and therefore they can get out two days earlier in June. It’s such a better calendar. I will be pissed if they adopt OG blue over amended blue.

She was mostly making the point that everyone wants less school, which isn't realistic. I think her argument would have been to ignore everyone and go with a shorter Winter Break.

(That is actually fine with me….I’m a Christian, but school is for learning not religion, so not having an O on that test means they could have tests.) I digress….I just think that is very interesting. 🤔

I mean... Catholic schools go to school on Ash Wednesday, along with the many feast days. They only take off on Holy Thursday and Good Friday (which I am not advocating for at a public school). It's like they don't even talk to the people who celebrate religious holidays before making decisions about whether to have them off. I have seen Indian people here post about going to school on Diwali being fine because it is celebrated at night.

We have an O day for All Saints’ Day and my very Catholic friend said you don’t have to miss school that day.

Exactly. (This is OP.) ALL religious holidays should be listed on the bottom just like Ash Wednesday is—finally they got something right! (Though inconsistent.)

Stella, sweetheart. If you needed your kids in school, you wouldn’t want ANY of these calendars!

As an ES teacher I don't need 3 or 4 PD days at the end of the SY. I need a TW just before 4th quarter grades are due, which is a week or two before the end of the quarter.

Not impressed with Stella

How can anyone think original blue is better? October/November and March/April are head and shoulders better in the amended version. I was so excited that they were going to pass a semi reasonable calendar and from what I’m seeing here (not watching the meeting), it’s getting shot down?

Do you not want the full 15 TWs?

Yes! I’d love to see a PW day before/after Memorial Day.

Because there are too many people who think that the raw number of 5-day weeks is the only thing that matters.

Then make 6/14 the last day of school. Then they’ll be the same.
