Asking guests to walk between ceremony and reception

Anonymous
I literally walk for hours daily. I would hate this - it can be over 100 degrees, it can be rainy, it can be both. There is a reason most people who walk for pleasure walk wearing comfortable clothes and not when it's 105 and pouring. Get a shuttle.

We did this with our guests. Catholic wedding so needed a church for the ceremony. It was in the middle of Manhattan so transportation didn’t make sense for a few blocks.

Please tell me you’re at least having a second line, not just people trudging down the street.

No. That's ridiculous.

Same with Mr. Summers are excruciatingly hot in this area and no one wants to walk ten minutes I hot. Humid weather.

If you’re going to do this, maybe make it a casual wedding so people can wear clothing comfortable for walking in DC heat and humidity.

....................I may have attended this wedding. Catholic Church to fancy club in NYC? Not arranging for transport was a sh*tshow. We couldnt' get ubers and we all wound up walking for blocks in heels and dresses we did not want sweaty. It was incredibly annoying.

Pay for transport. Economize elsewhere if you need to

Everyone has a phone now and can look up the address. This isn't 1980 where people have to pull out a paper map. They will see it's a short walk away and can take an Uber if they don't feel like walking.

DP. I have to laugh at you Uber boosters who always come on threads to say airily, "Just take an Uber." Are you just blissfully unaware that in DC at least, it can be difficult to book an Uber for such a short ride as OP is talking about? And that factors like the day of the week, the time and the locations involved can all make it more difficult to "just take an Uber"?

and that 200 people will all be trying to book an uber at once?

why an Uber in NYC? Why not try finding a cab?

Get a shuttle both ways. Nobody wants to walk 10 minutes in uncomfortable shoes and also what about your elderly family members?

I went to a similar event and the hosts hired a fleet of taxis/town cars to be on call. The town cars chilled outside the venue when one event ended and then ferried the people 5 blocks away to the next venue.

It worked well because elderly guests didn’t have to climb into a bus, there was no waiting until the bus was full, and the younger guests enjoyed the walk if they didn’t want to wait 10 min for the next taxi. (It was also a 10 min walk / 5 min drive in a very walkable city.)

Your guests may be more fussy.

depending on when this wedding was held, it may have been when there were a real dearth of cabs. better now, but not overly abundant.

This is tons of weddings in the city, but it’d be interesting if you knew one another.

I did this at my cousin's wedding in Manhattan in September! We walked from the church to the reception. Even my 81 year old dad walked it and he's not spry. It was about 6-7 blocks if I remember correctly.

People could have gotten ubers had they wanted to (and I'm sure some did). I think you are fine to let people walk.
