Are schools in FL terrible? Would you send your kids?

Last time I checked, both K-12 and unis in FL were ranked higher than in MD.

Of course under the average there's substantial variance. OP, there are plenty of good school systems in FL, and also bad ones, like in MD, VA and DC.

Yes. Allowing your children to be educated like this and paying FL taxes is morally reprehensible.

I see what you did there

All were worried about schools. Several were surprised to discover their kids were behind and needed tutors to catch up.

Judging all schools in FL is pointless. Would you equate all schools in DC or NYC? MD? VA? Of course not.

Good rule of thumb: affluence of the school district. Having said that, I know a wealthy philanthropist who spearheads fundraising efforts for the Naples school district. Not sure why there’s such a need for private philanthropy in such a wealthy area.

Parkland is in the middle of nowhere, quite far from the coast. If schools there are very good compared to DC schools, imagine those in more established areas like Broward or Boca.

It's quite incredible to see the ignorance and the arrogance coming from folks like OP.

Parkland IS Broward...

hmm...if you think this is a Florida-specific problem, I've got some bad news for you.

I would never move kids to FL. And I live there (kids are grown). You may find some good privates but the culture is….how do I say….ignorant, racist and just plain stupid. It doesn’t matter what your political leanings are, FL should be another country. DeSantis is destroying the schools. We live in a fairly affluent community and kids have a great life. But the lack of culture (diversity) and “good Christians” who use the Bible as a weapon are rampant. Food prices are much higher than the DC area.
ANYONE can carry a gun in FL and they are about to approve concealed carry. This combined with the worst mental health resources in the country makes FL unsafe.
I would caution parents that you are raising your kids in a very different world than the one you grew up in.

Why?

are they letting boys call themselves girls in order to access female spaces down there?

Not the PP I would not want my daughter to grow up or live in a state where abortion access is banned. And if my daughter wanted to move to one of those places as an adult that would be a point of consideration that I'd discuss with her. In some states it is almost impossible to get an abortion even when the life of the mother is being threatened because doctors are so scared of being sued

Abortions are legal in Florida through the 15th week of pregnancy, with an exception afterwards if the mother's life is in danger. By way of comparison, in the right-wing hellhole of Denmark, abortion is only permitted through the first 12 weeks (but with a similar exception for the mother's health).

What, exactly, are you talking about?

You are entitled to your opinion but I think this characterization of the entire state of Florida is ignorant and ridiculous.

I live in a great Gulf Coast city, there is culture in the form of theater, museums, music, and art, there is diversity in the population, there is a mix of people of many religions as well as no religion, and food prices are definitely not higher than in the DC area. There are many good schools in Florida, check any list of the top high schools in the country and you will see a lot in Florida. In my community, which is not particularly affluent, there is about an equal mix of Rs and Ds (info available online to all) and nobody starts political conversations because we don't want to argue about stuff like that, we're having a nice life and want to keep it that way.

DeSantis is a huge concern with the crap he comes up with but no more so than some other states. The biggest concern with him is that he may end up as our next President and what will you do then, advise people of how awful it will be to live in the entire country? The negatives of Florida will not change if intelligent, enlightened people are discouraged from moving there with generalizations such as you have stated. The entire culture of Florida is "ignorant, racist and just plain stupid"? Hardly! That may have been your experience in your affluent community but it does not generalize to the whole state.

For the 5754854th time, in Denmark abortion is free & easily accessible (no driving 400 miles to the nearest clinic), and people are less inclined to seek one because they’re not going to plunged into poverty if they have a baby there.

If you’re going the public route my family has kids in a “good” public school in Florida and had come from Connecticut previously. Florida obviously does not compare to the education that can be had in Connecticut but they said they felt Florida has a very strong math and science program but was lacking in their English/comp lit education and they’re supplementing the kids with extra books at home. One was just accepted into NYU this year and wants to go to law school.

Connecticut has some of the best public schools in the country.

Connecticut has numerous wealthy, non-diverse areas with great schools.

Correct. I lol’ed at the PP. Go talk to some kids in Hartford, New London, Bridgeport & Danbury and ask them how their “great schools” are working out.

How does Florida compare to a state with a similar population?

Okay, but what does your complaint have to do with Florida, in particular?

A quick google search turns up 43 abortion providers in Florida, with pretty good coverage all over the state, other than the panhandle west of Tallahassee. There's nobody in Florida that needs to drive 400 miles for an abortion (probably the longest would be someone driving from Perdido Key to Tallahassee, at around 215 miles).

So, again, what are you going on about?

DeSantis just sponsored a 6-week bill and they are biting in it today

That's not the complaint given about abortion restrictions. Are you OK with Florida's abortion restrictions being done nationwide, if it is free and easily accessible after 15 weeks, and there is better child care provisions?

I don’t support abortion restrictions.
