I would never move kids to FL. And I live there (kids are grown). You may find some good privates but the culture is….how do I say….ignorant, racist and just plain stupid. It doesn’t matter what your political leanings are, FL should be another country. DeSantis is destroying the schools. We live in a fairly affluent community and kids have a great life. But the lack of culture (diversity) and “good Christians” who use the Bible as a weapon are rampant. Food prices are much higher than the DC area. ANYONE can carry a gun in FL and they are about to approve concealed carry. This combined with the worst mental health resources in the country makes FL unsafe. I would caution parents that you are raising your kids in a very different world than the one you grew up in.
You are entitled to your opinion but I think this characterization of the entire state of Florida is ignorant and ridiculous. I live in a great Gulf Coast city, there is culture in the form of theater, museums, music, and art, there is diversity in the population, there is a mix of people of many religions as well as no religion, and food prices are definitely not higher than in the DC area. There are many good schools in Florida, check any list of the top high schools in the country and you will see a lot in Florida. In my community, which is not particularly affluent, there is about an equal mix of Rs and Ds (info available online to all) and nobody starts political conversations because we don't want to argue about stuff like that, we're having a nice life and want to keep it that way. DeSantis is a huge concern with the crap he comes up with but no more so than some other states. The biggest concern with him is that he may end up as our next President and what will you do then, advise people of how awful it will be to live in the entire country? The negatives of Florida will not change if intelligent, enlightened people are discouraged from moving there with generalizations such as you have stated. The entire culture of Florida is "ignorant, racist and just plain stupid"? Hardly! That may have been your experience in your affluent community but it does not generalize to the whole state.
