Effortlessly cool "I just threw this on but look like a million bucks" outfit to go out for drinks

Shaker sweaters! They were great then, great now.

I agree that you should go with your favorite sweater and jeans combo. If you want to get something new, I think that monochromatic looks are closest to effortlessly cool.

I really like that black outfit

A black, washed black, or medium blue, in a straight-leg silhouette with a high percentage of cotton compared to synthetic. Flares or a cropped bootcut could work and might help camouflage some extra weight, but your tailoring must be on point since they’ll look odd if not hemmed at exactly the right spot. A cotton straight leg is your safest bet.

On top, wear a beautiful cashmere or wool sweater in a color that’s flattering for you, which is probably not a neutral like black or ivory. Chunky knitwear with a shorter length is in, so stay away from any tunics so you don’t drown your waist. Fully tuck in the sweater or do a French tuck. Google videos on how to tuck in thick knitwear. You could also wear a silk shirt or sweater tank under a oversized wool blazer. If wearing a collared shirt, leave the collar inside the blazer instead of pulling it out. Tonal dressing could be chic here, like a dark green silk shirt under a jade blazer. Keep the color tone consistent in tonal dressing to keep your look harmonious (all cool tones, all warm, etc.).

Don’t wear a coat if you don’t need one. If it’s chilly, wear a leather jacket (slightly oversized, not tight) or a beautiful wool or cashmere coat in a flattering color.

For shoes, wear leather or suede mid-length boots with a square, western, or almond toe. Avoid boots that stop right at your ankle - they should go under your jeans. If wearing flares, go for a 70s style with a sky-high heel and platform to elongate your legs. Clean and condition your shoes.

If wearing a shirt and blazer on top, try an unstructured bag like a suede bucket or hobo. If wearing an oversized sweater, carry a more structured purse (think early 90s Coach leather bags with a top handle). Avoid all logos. Your purse and shoes are a good time to play around with color. For example, oxblood shoes and bag would look amazing with blue jeans and a ice blue sweater. Clean and condition your leather bag if it needs it.

Simple jewelry, nothing chunky or oversized. Clean it if you haven’t recently.

An interesting but not distracting belt to emphasize your waist. Your bag, belt, and shoes should look harmonious but not match exactly, unless they’re all black.

Don’t spend an extraordinary amount of time on your hair or makeup. Nothing would be more embarrassing than to have your friend comment or point out your appearance ( that would be the opposite of effortlessly cool). Do a face mask and keep your makeup simple. No overdone eyeshadow. Don’t get a blowout unless you are hopeless at styling your hair. If your hair is long, loose waves or a bouncy 90s blowout looks great. Google hair tutorial videos for inspiration and tips.

I like this advice. But why this?
Avoid boots that stop right at your ankle - they should go under your jeans.

A lot of the fashion photos show a gap between boot and pants.

Get this sweater. Super cute and a bit cropped. If you pair with high waisted dark jeans, will make you look longer. Knee high boots to finish the look.

No. Bad advice if OP is shorter and hourglass. Stick to ONE color, preferably dark - navy or black or or grey - and shoes with a slight heel, like a bootie. (Sometimes shorter people who wear knee high boots look chopped off at the leg unless they're thin and ruler-shaped.) Wear makeup. Depending on your skin, you want tinted moisturizer (lighter coverage) or a CC cream (heavier coverage). Get your brows done and your hair freshly cut and colored. Tinted lip gloss. Stud earrings. and a simple necklace. Polish up your wedding and engagement rings. Carry a purse that looks subtly expensive.

This sweater instantly adds weight to anyone who wears it. If you don't have the build of a coat hanger, you will look chunky in it. Especially if you are short and/or busty.

Honestly, I am built like a coat hangar and I don't like it. The combo of roll neck, dropped seams for the sleeves, a busy/bulky pattern AND a crop are just not going to be flattering on anyone. I also do not get the color options. The black and ivory are fine but the others are way to bold for a sweater that is already a lot. With a busy sweater pattern, I'd look for more neutral options like olive or lavender. I love a good jewel tone sweater but it works better with a more simple knit that is also a bit more closely fitted.

Would aim for ankle boots but would probably end up in Rothy's because they are so comfy.

I'm not a skirt person.

Nah, not in 2022

Wow, the 1980's Forenza sweater from the Limited making the rounds!

Ha! We used to we the V-neck Forenza backwards in HS. I forgot all about the Forenza sweater. Thanks for making me smile

We did in that in college (I'm a bit older )

OP, are you seriously considering buying new clothes for this meeting? Think about that one for a sec.

I agree with this. I'd shop my closet and wear clothes that are flattering but made me feel good.

I think part of what is happening here is that OP wants to *feel* effortlessly cool in front of these people who make her feel uncool. It's not really about the outfit. Which is why advice to wear clothes that require a certain level of effort are a bad idea. These will just make her feel more like a try-hard.

Honestly, if this drinks plan is something OP really wants to do, here's what I'd do:

Where my favorite casual jeans outfit, reasonably comfortable shoes (flats or flat boots), some cute jewelry and do my hair as I normally would to meet my friend for drinks (no salon blowout, but I might make a little extra effort to ensure it's not like third day ponytail hair).

Make a dinner reservation for a nearby but low-key restaurant about an hour after I'm supposed to meet for drinks, with my DH.

Show up 10-15 minutes late, be charming for about 50 minutes while drinking one drink, asking lots of questions, and being friendly and chill.

Leave.

And scene.

Best advice so far. And I want to see the movie . . . who plays OP? Sharon Horgan?

This is what I’d wear. Just make sure the sneaks aren’t golden goose because then you look try hard (and like a trend whore with no financial sense) not effortless.

Oh hell no! No sneakers on a Saturday night. If it were a day thing- fine.

Sneakers after dark fur drinks on a woman are not cool, definitely not sexy. Wtf?!

I live out west. We do things differently. You’ll routinely see fashion sneakers out here.

Agreed; fashion sneakers are having a moment.

Florals for spring.

No mock necks for busty ladies.
