46 people found dead in tractor trailer near San Antonio

Honestly, school checking citizenship would be one huge deterrent. People would come here to work but not bring their families.
Companies not hiring illegal workforce would be another deterrent but it seems like there’s too much interest in cheap labor.
Landlords will also rent for cash…
So I think schools are the only real way

The details are horrendous.

Chilling new details emerged Tuesday in the Texas border horror that left at least 51 migrants dead — including how victims stuffed in the truck were allegedly sprinkled with steak seasoning to mask their odor.

A law-enforcement official said many of the estimated 100 people jammed into the tractor-trailer in San Antonio appeared to have been covered in spices to cover up the smell during the human-smuggling tragedy, according to the Texas Tribune.

A cry for help coming from the 18-wheeler that was found abandoned on the southern outskirts of town Monday evening led to the discovery of “stacks of bodies’’ inside the vehicle, officials said.

Bodies also were found for blocks around the truck’s location, suggesting that some of the migrants had tried to make their escape while the vehicle was still moving, the San Antonio Express-News said.

The illicit rig had apparently been made to look like a properly registered truck in an effort to evade detection.

The truck was “cloned,” said the owner of a local Alamo-based trucking company to the Express-News — with it painted to match one of his own, right down to copying his legal vehicle’s Department of Transportation registration number.

“Our reefer [refrigerated trailer] is sitting right in the yard,” said Felipe Betancourt Jr., who owns Betancourt Trucking with his father. “That one in San Antonio is not our trailer.”

While the truck in San Antonio was made to look like a refrigerated truck, “There was no visible working AC unit on that rig,” said San Antonio Fire Chief Charles Hood.

The truck had apparently suffered a mechanical failure when it was abandoned — with the driver nabbed trying to flee the scene on foot, cops told the New York Times on Tuesday.

The truck driver was apprehended by authorities in a nearby field and taken into federal custody, police said. Two other men also were arrested. Authorities said one of the suspects is an American citizen.

Authorities said the truck crossed the border in Laredo, 150 miles south of San Antonio. The truck then passed through a border checkpoint on Interstate 35, said Rep. Henry Cuellar of Texas. It is unclear whether the migrants were in the truck when it apparently cleared the checkpoint.

People being locked in the trailer suggests human trafficking, not immigration.

What social welfare benefits do you think people who don't have status in the US are getting?

Interesting that Abbott already knew all this before the investigation. This is how he could blame Biden.

Free Public Education. IEPs. ESL. Free Breakfast and lunch. All those things add to to a hefty free social benefit

This. Amazing how anyone could blame others at this point. Democrats are definitely in a defensive stance - and should be.

Ok well should I blame the Presidents presiding over deaths like this in the 80s, 90s…. on Regan, Bush, Clinton, Bush? Because morons, this has been happening for years! You twits only care when it gets picked up by conservative news! So comical! Your anger is so ingenious!!

Hmm. What a short and selective memory you have. I recall Trump being blamed for absolutely everything under the sun during his four years as president - and beyond. You have no leg to stand on here. None. Zero.

Where’s your link to back up this idiotic claim? We’ll wait.

But maybe that’s their deference strategy—make things so awful here no one wants to come? Too bad, we will still be a stop on the way to Canada.

Glibness aside—“closing the border” tighter will do nothing to stop migration. Desperate people will find a way, and the harder you make it, the more risk they will take, and the more tragedies like this you will see.

Do Republicans have any ideas for making Latin America better for the people that live there? Doubt it.

I never understood why US corporations went all the way to Asia to invest, when they could have invested in Central and South America. More jobs and education flowing through those countries would have made a stronger Americas from north to south.

I guess we need to issue smart phones to people in South America.

They already have smart phones. Just no charging during the $10000 pp smuggle into America trailer truck ride.

Would be cheaper to Uber!

Cheaper to buy a flight from Mexico City to Bwi like all the Africans and Caribbean visa overstayers do.

No one calls you up after you overstay your 90 day tourist visa. In fact ngo lawyers urge you to marry a citizen the day after you overstay and immediately file for a spousal green card. Voila!

There's also a very good chance these people were NOT willingly in that truck. They may be part of a human trafficking ring for forced labor or prostitution (read: slavery).

Republicans specially the ones in Texas are all over that stuff. Abbott would never end that type of trafficking.

Abbott really screwed the pooch this time.

How so?
I just regret that Abbott isn't still having trucks inspected at the border.
If the truck crossed carrying the migrants, they would have found them.

This is on Biden, Harris, and Mayorkas. The incompetent Three Stooges.

+1. They need to televise all of these economic migrant busts.

It’s amazing how America doesn’t know who enters or is even in its country.

What a joke.

Repeat phony asylum illegals already deported would do this 2,3,4 more times until they get to Montgomery county and their fake ID.

It is what happens when we have a president who refuses to secure the border and enforce our border laws.

Few people realize that more migrants died trying to enter our country during Biden's first year than under Obama or Trump. And, his second year is likely to be even worse.

Over 650 migrants died at the U.S.-Mexico border in 2021, as of the most recent data posted in a Wednesday report by the International Organization for Migration's Missing Migrants Project.

650 Die at Border in First Year of Biden, 24 Percent More Than Peak Under Trump, Obama

This figure represents a 24 percent jump from the previous high of 524 posted in 2019, prior to the pandemic, under then-President Donald Trump. Furthermore, this number represents a steeper jump than the figures reported over the last three years of the Obama administration when a high of 412 was reported in 2016, representing a 58 percent change.

In the first year of his presidency, Joe Biden has overseen a continued surge of migration at the Southwest border that rose each month of his tenure from the end of January 2021 up until July 2021.

Sorry no. This happens when people lose faith in their countries and want to flee to one that appears to be working. But I realize you’re here to parrot Fox and conservative hate towards immigrants. This scenario happens all the time but the news selectively reports on it. If you lived along the border you would know this.

Except that they openly say they came here to make $8 per hour instead of $2 per hour there and intend to send half their earnings to the homeland to build a new house and pay for aunties and cousins stuff. The sense of entitlement is real. It is a stressful life if people demanding your greenbacks.

Wanting a better life and willing to work for it isn’t entitlement. Having grown up in a border town, your characterization of people is wrong and deeply offensive. Get outside of your bubble! It’s just embarrassing.

Apply for a real visa then, not break laws. America can’t take in the planet’s 5 billion poor, uneducated, unskilled, illiterate people and their 3.5 kids.

Not exactly a social welfare benefit, but education. There are illegal children enrolled in our public schools and the past

The Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) is a federally-funded, state-administered program run by the USDA. SFSP reimburses program operators who serve free healthy meals and snacks to children and teens in low-income areas. In Fairfax County, any child under the age of 18 can visit one of the food distribution sites and get a free lunch. Private school kids, homeschooled kids, FCPS kids, "illegal" kids. You just show up so a child who lives in Maryland or DC could show up at one of the sites and get their free food.

FCPS has been providing free breakfast to all students for at least five years. I can't remember when it started. In our elementary school, the breakfast was delivered to the classrooms in the morning and there was enough for every student in the class. In the middle and high school, if the student wanted breakfast, they would go into the cafeteria and get it. The last couple of years, every student in the county has been able to get free lunch as well. In the past, the family had to fill out paperwork every year to qualify for free and reduced lunch prices. I believe this coming school year, they are going back to requiring paperwork.

Yes. The Supreme Court ruled in Pyler v Doe that children have a right to a free public education regardless of status. The summer meals program is free to all (the nature of the program with kids showing up often by themselves to sites would make it hard to certify or vet kids). Schools that have switched to a local area benefit do not need to individually certify for meals. Got anything else? Every eaten a free summer meal?

I wonder if the Roberts' Court will reverse this Pyler case. Stare decisis is dead.
