Pew has tons of data on the views on abortion among American members of each religion. By far the largest percentage of respondents in the major religions who oppose abortion are fundamentalist Protestants (two thirds), after that is is Catholics (almost half.) https://www.pewresearch.org/religion/religious-landscape-study/views-about-abortion/ |
Is this in the Hebrew Bible? Are there differences among Jews? |
There’s no such thing as a “Hebrew Bible.” This is in the Torah and the Talmud. There aren’t big differences among Jews on this issue, as far as I know. |
Because the Catholic Church (Bishops) have more money, influence, and effects on our rights. Catholics also do not believe women are equal. |
Fact: Because Nixon made it bad and made it a political thing. Prior to him riling up the Catholics on the issue, because he needed the votes, it wasn't a thing. Plenty of reading out there on this that backs it up. As well as podcasts. |
I think it’s Reagan that made it a “platform” for evangelicals. |
Could you point out where in the Torah it says abortion is OK? I mean, I’m pro-choice, but I’ve also read the Bible, and that one didn’t stand out. Where I’m going with this is, how many scriptures (like the New Testament) are silent on the subject, and we all go along until somehow it gets politicized in a given faith. |
You are overstating this; not all Catholics agree on these issues (as the Pew report above shows). |
It does not matter what Catholic people think. It does not matter what the pope thinks. What you don’t understand is the counsel of bishops have loads of money and great lawyers and they lobby. They campaign from the pulpit (which is very non-Catholic) They pay for laws, they prevent rape victims from bringing cases to court because they pay for judges and politicians to create laws to stop them, they pay gambling debts of SC nominees… dude, you are a sheep in their f’d up need to control the US. A bunch of crazy white males holding on for dear life. That is the US Catholic Church, it’s a disaster. They’ve moved on from raping kids to f’ing with women and gay people. It’s totally f’d up… and the majority of Catholics know it, but you just follow along like sheep. |
Can you point to an organization in the US, like the counsel of bishops, that lobby congress and local authorities to deny women, rape victims and gay people rights? It’s not about any of the books, it’s about the action of their leaders in the United Stared of America. Catholic leaders in the US, their actions are criminal. |
Here you go: https://www.myjewishlearning.com/article/abortion-in-jewish-thought/ |
The Torah does not prohibit abortion. Honestly, there is very little—if any—discussion of it. You have to read Jewish law (aka the Talmud) for information on when abortion is required. If you just read the Bible, you’re essentially getting next to nothing when it comes to what is meaningful to Jews. |
Why not be direct --- Bonhoeffer was part of a failed plot to murder Hitler |
Yes so he’s cool with murdering Hitler… I agree. But he thinks a woman with stoic pregnant should die. He can see a justification in one but nit the other, not a great “thinker”. Just another self serving man. |

The Catholics are at it again…
Dear Catholic poster… this is where you money goes From https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2022/06/29/abortion-state-lines/ The Thomas More Society, a conservative legal organization, is drafting model legislation for state lawmakers that would allow private citizens to sue anyone who helps a resident of a state that has banned abortion from terminating a pregnancy outside of that state. The draft language will borrow from the novel legal strategy behind a Texas abortion ban enacted last year in which private citizens were empowered to enforce the law through civil litigation. The subject was much discussed at two national antiabortion conferences last weekend, with several lawmakers interested in introducing these kinds of bills in their own states. The National Association of Christian Lawmakers, an antiabortion organization led by Republican state legislators, has begun working with the authors of the Texas abortion ban to explore model legislation that would restrict people from crossing state lines for abortions, said Texas state representative Tom Oliverson (R), the charter chair of the group’s national legislative council. “Just because you jump across a state line doesn’t mean your home state doesn’t have jurisdiction,” said Peter Breen, vice president and senior counsel for the Thomas More Society. “It’s not a free abortion card when you drive across the state line.” |
