I'm not the one saying masks are fine because blind children develop language normally, when many do not. And the research or far from clear whether language delays are the result of the visual impairment itself, or other issues. |
So if they're going to make this decision based on feeling of parents rather than public health guidance, the least they could do is put it to a vote, right? It is similar at ours- a group of loud parents feels very strongly about keeping masks. But it's really hard to tell how large of a group this is. |
As sad as it is to say, I think that if the masks stay mandatory for more than the next week or two, our beloved little faith-based preschool won't survive to see another school year. A small group of parents have completely hijacked the issue and the director is terrified to anger them (plus I think her own Covid fears add to the issue). Even though the majority of us have made it very clear to her that we are ready for masks to be optional, she keeps saying that by keeping them mandatory everyone is safer and we need to respect the comfort levels of this small group of very vocal families. From conversation at drop-off this morning, it looks like most people who aren't aging out this year are actively looking for new programs for next year, based on how this has all be handled, especially in the last couple of weeks. So unless things change, I think this group of masks-forever parents are going to find themselves winning the battle but losing the war when they don't have a school for their kids in a few months. |
Here we go again with the massively inflated sense of importance. |
We have a victory - Audubon Nature preschool is allowing no masking outside. This is in line with the Maryland guidance they were given.
A victory for common sense! But also in line with public health guidance- a win win. And great for the kids for with no real increase in their risk profile! |
I don’t see it that way- parents are so frustrated- they see the science and guidance change and wonder why kids in this area are treated differently then rest of US ( and the world). It’s pushing people to make big changes- we are looking to move! |
Ummmm… ok? Why the $&@ have they been masking outside?!? When will they follow guidance and get rid of them inside is the question. |
I think some of these places have purposefully been going over the top and carefully time concessions on something so that parents see it as a victory and shut up for a while. We aren't at Audobon, but ours also reinstated outdoor masks with Omicron and haven't reversed yet- they say it was recommended to them by licensing (through DHHS). So while we should be encouraging our center to align with the CDC on the new guidance for indoor masking, we are back where we were a year ago trying to get rid of the outside masking. |
Sadly it’s not a democracy. They’re going to base the decision over whoever is loudest or they perceive as most likely to pull their kids over the policy…which in most cases has been the most covid cautious. |
I have not seen a single KN95 or KF94 respirator on the kids at my child's daycare (and I refuse to get DD these things - they seem really uncomfortable and it's a lot of money for something she can't wear properly - it's hard enough to find a cloth mask that fits well FFS). Every single child is wearing a cloth mask. At any one time 50% of them are under their noses. WTF is the point of this? I blame Democrats for participating in the politicization of masking. |
Call up licensing and ask. My preschool in arlington was saying nonsense like this and everytime I’d pick up the phone and ask licensing. Inevitably they were either misunderstanding or misconstruing. Get the name of the person in licensing you talked to and tell your daycare who you spoke to. |

Masking little kids is extremely unethical. It causes speech and socialization delays. |
I have nothing but sympathy for the preschool administrators trying to figure this out. Those parents are deranged. I know people are scared about the unknowns of covid but it will forever horrify me that some parents have thought it was safer to teach their children to keep distance from people, shun children who don't mask, live in fear of the virus itself, etc., etc. Placing parental anxiety on children is not okay. Also I'm sorry but germs get swapped nonstop at daycare. If you send your kids to daycare you have to accept that they might be bringing covid home -- full stop. |
I'm really hoping the CDC updates their guidance here. It seems like ages 2-4 are the last to be required to mask, which is pretty silly. And I'll probably have my kid continue to mask (spouse feels more strongly), I just can not stand the logical inconsistency here.
It has not been updated since late January, and they are indicating it is being updated for the "new' guideance rolled out a couple of weeks ago. https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/community/schools-childcare/child-care-guidance.html#masking |
