Because it's a good school, in a vibrant and fabulous city, that is a medical center as well as provides lots of other opportunities across the spectrum. And it's only 4 hours away.

My kid visited Minnesota (Mac, St. Olaf, Carleton). All the white sameness at the schools and around the Twin Cities in general was hard for her. Everything felt very alien to her— even though she is white. She just didn’t like the vibe. Which is ash me, because for different reasons p, all 3 schools had something to offer her. Pitt was a lot closer to the mix of kids at her FCPS public.

The percentage of white students at Pitt and UMN (both of which my kid applied to) is almost identical. Can’t speak for the SLACs you mentioned.

My husband did UM. So, I can’t comment. I did the 3 SLACs with my older kid a couple years go, and the lack of diversity was striking. But, he liked St. Olaf. My current kid took a strong dislike to MN, period. The whole state. She just hated it, and felt like whole area was very white and very weird. I know demographics say it isn’t true. But good luck convincing a teen whose mind is made up. Not MN, period. Which is a shame, because Carleton in particular should be a excellent match. Nope.

Pittsburgh’s. Much more diverse city in general. More like DC.

Really not trying to beat this into the ground but a quick search shows Pittsburgh is 67% White, while Minneapolis is 64%. So …

I can't speak directly to this comparison between Pittsburgh and Minneapolis but stepping back, two cities can have similar overall racial/ethnic diversity numbers but be very different in how that plays out. For example, it's very different to have a city with diversity within neighborhood vs another where persons of different races/ethnicities live in highly clustered and fully separate communities. And it's very different when economic diversity cuts across all races/ethnicities versus being stratified so that wealth is all within the white community. To simply state %white in these cities is pretty naive.

I went to PITT for grad school and I can tell you it did not feel as "white" as the PP's stats (assuming they are correct) are stating. FWIW. I lived in the city, not in South Side or North Hills (both very white).

Plus salaries in the DMV are very high (as well 529 utilization), so Pitt is an option for many families. It's cheaper than all reputable private schools.

My DD just checked her Pitt portal yesterday and her status screen went from saying application pending, to one with two buttons - Accept or Decline. Does that mean she was accepted? There is nothing in the document section and she has not received an email. Just trying to figure out what this means.
