Washington Ballet Nutcracker

I wonder if any one knows any details on the restrictions they are putting into place re casting and what that means re total kids cast. I assume they may be looking to scale down some of the parts for the younger kids but just speculation.

I'm not at WB, but my DD goes to another ballet school and it's interesting to see how different companies are dealing with Nutcracker casting in the time of Covid. I know at ours, they went older and double cast roles (I suppose so there would be fewer kids backstage and they can social distance better?).

Also at another ballet school and I was comparing the casting list from 2019 and 2021, seems like there are fewer kids overall (with some dancing more roles) but I don't know if that's the studio limiting numbers, or if some families were more hesitant to sign up for the Nutcracker this year due to COVID. There were some earlier posts in this thread (I think) from folks who were skipping this year due to virus concerns.

Oh man, I don't know if DD will be able to sleep tonight.
I wonder if they will be casting more 12 and older and limiting the number of 11 and younger, just to have more vaccinated kids?

I was wondering the same thing regarding casting more heavily in the 12 and older for roles. I also don’t know how much having to wear a mask on stage if they are under 12 plays into the decisions. Guess we will see sometime tomorrow.

My DD is going to be devastated if she doesnt get cast. Her former studio offered her a spot in their Nutcracker and she declined to be able to perform with TWB again. She's been waiting for this since before the pandemic.

True, I can see some families thinking they don't want to deal with the worry about exposure and the SD and potential quarantines and deciding "pass." At ours, I think most kids were looking forward to getting onstage after having missed last year. Lot of disappointed kids who were not cast because they weren't old enough.

For purely selfish reasons, I wouldn't mind if this was the case - I have a 12 year old desperate to be cast.

Good luck to all the hopeful dancers who auditioned!

ditto!

Yes, good luck! I never danced but I played an instrument very seriously and it was just more motivating to have a concert coming up - daily practice is such a grind and it's important for kids (and people in general) to have something to work toward! So, hoping as many as possible get roles.

It also promised such a joyful return to normal after so many missed opportunities in the past 18 months of pandemic life. I hope as many as possible (and safe) can get roles, too.

Same. Looking forward to this helped DC slug it out virtually for a year and a half. Good luck to all dancers.

This makes me so sad. DD was really looking forward to Nutcracker...she loves ballet, but is what I would call average in abilities, so my guess is will not make the cut.

I'm only guessing here but I think some of the huge body count roles will probably be cut down, like Snow Angels, Soldiers, Butterflies. This makes me sad too. I'm doubtful my DD will be cast.

That's my guess also. If it were a normal year, mine would be a soldier.

26 hour count down...I wish we knew now!

Same same. She has been so, so excited for Nutcracker season. Loves everything about it. One more hard covid lesson ...
