Washington Ballet Nutcracker

I don't know if the odds are at all the same but in a past year when the Washington Post wrote about it, 60 kids who auditioned did not make the cut and 460 got roles.

Best of luck to everyone today / Friday!

I think the roles are similar but not the same year after year; they may be in the same (party) scene but as different characters, for example.

I'd say 95% do.

My DS didn't get a role a few years back, but he was barely hanging on by a thread and I was hoping getting to be in a show could have him stick it out through the end of the year at least since he's such a ham. I'm not sure what happened in the audition, but I'm sure he didn't want to be there and showed it.

He loved ballet the year before, but young kids change fast.

I'm interested to see if it changes this year, but most kids get a role. Rumors were abounding that there would be fewer dancers on the stage at a time, and there are certainly fewer performances this year - "only" thirty shows, I believe.

I think it's harder for the very young (PB3) because there are only so many spots and then the older girls when the roles dwindle again. But if you're in 1A, 1B, 2 or 3, the odds are really good. So many snow angels and soldiers!

How many soldiers are there?

Level 2, we were told Friday. Looks like Saturday auditioners were told mid week and Sunday was told Friday.

My DD also said she auditioned for Chinese dancer, which I didn't think was open for her level, I wonder if things are a little different this year due to covid and the number of dancers auditioning.

If any of the Saturday Audition parents find out tonight, let us know!

Wish they'd put something up on their homepage at least. I'm refreshing the parent portal like a mad woman.

You’re right - it was super late. We also got a note from Donna saying it would be late. I wish we’d get some kind of update!

They just posted that resulted will be up by 11 pm on Friday and also that they are limiting casting in some roles this year so not everyone will get a part. I wonder if any one knows any details on the restrictions they are putting into place re casting and what that means re total kids cast. I assume they may be looking to scale down some of the parts for the younger kids but just speculation.

I'm not at WB, but my DD goes to another ballet school and it's interesting to see how different companies are dealing with Nutcracker casting in the time of Covid. I know at ours, they went older and double cast roles (I suppose so there would be fewer kids backstage and they can social distance better?).

Oh man, I don't know if DD will be able to sleep tonight.
I wonder if they will be casting more 12 and older and limiting the number of 11 and younger, just to have more vaccinated kids?
