Harriet Tubman 10 years in a row

Anonymous
Me to my 7th grader , who is holding a book on Harriet Tubman - "Hey, looks like you are learning about Harriet Tubman."
DS - "Yea, for the 10th year in a row."
Me- "Are you learning anything new?"
DS - "eh"

He goes to a MCPS

Can we mix it up a little?

Meh, that was how I felt about school in 7th grade too and this was in a very different district several decades ago.

It’s because there isn’t a single coherent curriculum.

My kid is in 8th grade. One year, they read the same book (Red Scarf Girl) in both HIGH and English.

I mean, can’t the teachers communicate and read different books? The kids mentioned it to the teachers and they kind of shrugged.

It's the BOE! They are behind this Tubmanification of MCPS and other war crimes!

My kid has been learning about US history since Ker, now in HS but new content is added, obvoiusly.

Maybe that's happening with HT topic?

It was meant as satire of the daily BOE hate posts. Sorry if this wasn't clear.

What school? I wish people would identify the school where this is happening - all schools are not doing the same thing.

My kids been learning about Rosa Parks year after year…

I don't think my child has read a book on Harriet Tubman ever in MCPS.

Is this the BOE fault, or curriculum, or teachers, or principals? Many kids have been learning about the same African American figures in history for 50+ years. This is exactly why parents and students keep saying talking about lack of representation in schools and curriculum and not just in MCPS. Its why they keep asking for ELA curriculum with a greater diversity of books.

My kid complained that every book was a different version of a coming-of-age struggle usually involving race or occasionally gender. She pined for just one sci fi option.

I do not remember any Harriet Tubman.

Yep, my kid has said the same thing- last 6 books in a row. These kids aren't stupid , they are being played and they know it.
