| Hi, we have a trip to Puerto Rico scheduled for early May. Wondering what it’s like to be on PR, with no power right now? |
| The power will be back on by then. I'll probably be back on in a few days. |
|
Loved through many power outages in PR. Including being two months without power after Hurricane Maria. So this is no biggy.
Know that all the tourist hotels have generators and are usually the first to get electricity turned back on. |

Lived…
Sorry for typos. |
Yeah but no one spends their PR vacation sitting in the hotel room. Traffic lights, restaurants, gas stations, street lights, shopping and airports down there with no power would really put a damper on a vacation. |
| We left today. Our entire resort has a generator so we didn’t realize the power was out until 12 hours later when someone told us. |
|
We are at a vrbo in Cabo Rojo. Currently in the dark. Everything in PR continues like nothing happened. Most businesses seem to have generators since Maria. I am so glad we are at least in a neighborhood in the dark. Would hate to be somewhere really remote. Most resorts if not all have generators. Restaurants do too.
But if you aren't up for a bit of an adventure, this isn't for you. It is hot. No running water since it has been 24 hours. Can only charge devices with a car. |
I’m shocked your VRBO doesn’t have a generator or two. Plus back up water tanks. |
Living somewhere for two months without power absolutely is a big deal for 99% of the people in the US, especially for people on vacation. Please do not act like being in a hot muggy tropical climate with no power, running water or air conditioning is not a big deal. That sounds horrendous and many of us have much higher standards of living. |
|
Yeah. OP here. The takeaway is that no one, certainly no US citizen including Puerto Rican’s, should live like that. Or Texans.
It’s too soon for me to decide what I’ll do with my May trip. Just wanted to shout out to my fellow US citizens in Puerto Rico. |
| Follow David Begnaud from CBS News. He’s reporting on this extensively. |
All Puerto Ricans are US citizens, so hope your shout-out is meant for them too. |
Reread the post. Your attempt at holier than thou snark is unwarranted. |
| Why would you let a few day power outage a month or more prior to your trip affect your trip? I’ve been in PR 5 months of the last year, and only ever lost power for 2 hours. Some of that was luck, power outages happen there more often than here, but it’s not the third world. It comes back. They are expecting the power to be restored to the majority of the island today. |

PP here in Cabo Rojo. Having no power in a hot climate sucks. No traffic lights, you lose all food, no AC - the worst. I'd check, like PP said that any rentals have generators and backup water. The water thing is concerning. No water for toilets. Power came on at 1:45am thank goodness. I will now ask lots of questions before booking any rental. And get insurance. Ours was cheap so I chose not too.
I cannot imagine going through a hurricane. After Maria, not only was there no power, but no communications. |
