Weight loss post partum newborn period

Anonymous
Hi - I don’t remember this being like this with my other two but I’m much older now and weight loss is hard. I’m two weeks post partum and gained 30 lbs. I have only lost ten pounds. I’m concerned that the scale isn’t budging at all. So, I have 20 to lose and no hopes that anything will “melt” off I guess. I’m exclusively breast feeding but I do not lose weight from that historically. I’m so annoyed. Anyone else? What did you do? When do I start actively dieting?

This makes me so sad to read You just grew and delivered an entire HUMAN BEING. Please be patient and gentle with yourself. You have plenty of time to lose weight. Just focus on healing and bonding with your new baby. Congratulations!

I am sorry; it’s been two WEEKS and you are weighing yourself?? That’s not healthy.

At six weeks, start going for walks. Don’t diet other than skipping desserts/extra snacks. Your baby needs you to focus on him.

You're only 2 weeks postpartum! Your body and hormones are adjusting. You'll get there, just not immediately.

If you want to lose it then stop breastfeeding and take diuretics. Most is likely water weight.

Don't worry OP! I was in the same situation and I had #3, 6 months ago. I barely lost anything and then around 12 weeks out started losing pretty rapidly (well, like a pound a week). Right now at 6 months I'm below my pre pregnancy weight. I will say that I'm still flabby, but that's how losing 30lbs goes. You are flabby and then your body firms it up.

Personally, sleep is so important to me, that we sleep train right at 4 months, and I don't worry about much of anything before that. If the weight falls off (it did with my first!), great. If you don't lose so much as a pound (that's what happened with my second), fine.

Then, I start small, incremental steps, and see how it goes. It's a balance at that point - there's so much going on, you have so many priorities, going back to work, etc, etc, so I wouldn't stress myself out too much, but at least try to get the numbers going in the right direction, get back into healthy eating habits (regular meals, veggies and fruits, less crap) and exercise as possible.

Once I wean at one year, that's time to buckle down and get serious if there's still issues. Generally I prefer Weight Watchers.

Are you nursing?

Start walking - weather is getting a lot nicer outside (minus this weeks rain)- put baby in bassinet stroller or wrap and walk. It melted off for me that way

Breastfeeding doesn't "melt" the weight off in like two weeks! I was re-reading the La Leche League book recently, and it said "most breastfeeding mothers lose about a lb a month" - a month!! I don't know where this idea came from that breastfeeeding will make you lose all your "baby weight" within 2 weeks.

Also, you have that baby weight for breastfeeding! Why would nature design us to lose all that fat when the baby is 2 weeks old?

I have no idea why you think you have “no hope” that anything will melt off when you’re only 2 weeks postpartum? With my first the weight loss would come off in chunks and then plateau. Around 3 months a big chunk came off, then plateaued again, then another chunk came off. It isn’t going to happen in 2 weeks!!!

See a therapist. You may have PPD or an eating disorder.

I had twins and gained 70 lbs. 10 months PP and I’ve lost 50 of it, haven’t done anything special. It takes time, but you’ll get there. Don’t beat yourself up!

Just because with my first two I was within 5 lbs of starting weight at 2 weeks. 20 just feels like a LOT.

Please stop weighing yourself.
