| My 5th grader’s teacher waits until the end of the marking period to grade almost everything even though she says that kids always have a chance to resubmit and improve their grade. In practice this never happens because she leaves the grading to the last minute. My kid currently has about two dozen ungraded assignments submitted between January and this week. Is this normal? |
No, not normal. |
| Same with our 4th grade teacher. Grades only submitted when they are required - so once at the midterm and once at the end of term. |
| Email teacher and ask what’s up. Cc principal. |
| That is so frustrating. |
I did, at the end of last quarter when the same thing happened. They blew me off. It causes a lot of stress for my daughter as she only gets feedback when it’s too late. The teacher is a tough grader too. Not sure what else to do. |
| It’s definitely not normal. I grade assignments immediately to allow time for retakes. Also that I’m not grading tons of assignments at the end of the quarter. There are several teachers unfortunately who do not do this. I hear complaints all the time from my students about other teachers. |
| Email the teacher and ask. Simple. |
| Screen shot what it currently looks like, with a time stamp. Email the teacher and cc the assistant, the principal and any other higher ups you can think of |
| Ha. I have kids in HS and this isn't unusual. It's definitely a PITA but not unusual. |
As I said, I did. |
High school kids have multiple teachers. 5th graders have one. |
| Are ES kids supposed to be able to make up any work for a higher grade? I have never heard of that policy. Is that written anywhere? |
I don’t know about make up work but my experience is that they can revise and resubmit assignments. This may be a Covid rule but when the teacher is very tough at grading this can be helpful to help the kids learn and react to feedback. |
I can see why it's a concern for HS, but 5th grade? Why worry so much? |
