BB guns at Walter Johnson and Magruder

Anonymous
Two guns found at these schools yesterday. I know BB guns are not generally lethal, but they still look like real handguns and they can hurt people. My kid goes to Magruder and said the kid with the gun was posting on snapchat with it stuck in his waistband and wanted to sell it. At least in this case someone told an adult.

Many of the students (and probably staff) and definitely parents were NOT HAPPY yesterday to find out about this. If folks think Magruder is back to normal after the school shooting, they are wrong.

Also, no mental health services in sight. These kids suffered trauma. And nobody cares. I find MCPS' claim to mental health support laughable.

Maybe the SROs can provide that now.

NP.. provide what? SROs aren't there to provide mental health support. They are not trained psychologists.

And they are no longer SROs. There are CEOs who are not necessarily permanently embeded in the schools.

MCPS/MoCo stated that in lieu of SROs, they would bring in more mental health professionals. Did they do that? I haven't heard about getting those services at our HS (not Magruder). I do hear about Suicide Prevention type presentations at the PTA meetings. Is that the kind of services that MoCo was talking about replacing SROs with? If so, how pathetic, especially given that only a tiny fraction of parents attend PTA meetings.

What happens to these kids? Do they get a slap on the wrist or are there serious consequences like expulsion? I think as long as there are no serious consequences Kids won’t take this seriously.

Schools cannot fix the ills of society.

Nowhere else in the world are schools expected to provide all of this to students. Some nations provide free meals, sure and some provide an outside safety perimeter in locations with increased terrorism risk. But none provide weapons security + free social services + mental health support + whatever else OP demands. Schools do not have that capacity, unless you want to pour billions more into education, hire a plethora of varied career professionals, not just educators, and transform each school into a fortress.

Until the USA legislates and enforces a weapons ban (with hunting exceptions), it can expect school shootings to continue.

Anyone know the story behind the WJ one? Was it something threatening or just really, really stupid?

Weren't some parents pitching SROs as the new social worker?

SROs have and can connect with students, but they aren't licensed social workers.

But an SRO can assess whether a wound is from a gunshot better than lay people can.

What exactly does this have to do with BB guns. Do you want to ban BB guns also?

I’m curious why someone in Bethesda has a BB gun. I can’t imagine anyplace there’s space to shoot it.

Plenty of wooded areas around--Cabin John Park, Rock Creek Park, etc.

You are stupid. America has a gun culture. If you ban real weapons, and you make a huge effort to target illegally acquired weapons, and you gradually squash this idea that everything can be resolved with guns, then there won't be that many kids coming to school with them, even BB guns.

Nothing can be solved if you don't address the elephant in the room. The Constitution does not explicitly command that citizens walk about with guns anywhere and everywhere.

That seems like an incredibly bad idea

I think it's clear that kids who bring bb guns to school are not that bright to begin with.

Of course, just making the point that Bethesda does not just mean downtown Bethesda. WJ pulls from parts of Bethesda, Kensington, Garrett Park, and Rockville.
