My kid loves dreambox.
If Larla finishes all of the dreambox levels by the end of 5th grade (level 8), will they get into Pre-Algebra for 6th grade middle school and be well prepared? |
We were told that placement in pre-algebra for 6th depended on getting a high pass on the math SOL and teacher recommendation. I have a current 5th grader. |
Nothing to do with dreambox. Based on performance, SOL, and Math Inventory. Nationally 1030 is the algebra readiness benchmark for MI but APS has sometimes set the benchmark even higher. |
I'm the PP – thanks for that. I hadn't heard that MI part. Is there a mid-year MI administered? |
Their cut off last year was something like 1130 on the MI & a perfect 600 on the 6th grade math SOL. |
MI is done beginning, middle, and EOY in grades 3-5 in elementary. The EOY is used for placement. It's then given in middle school until your student enters algebra. |
This cannot be true - many students in 6th grade Pre-Algebra did not get a perfect 600 on the 6th grade math SOL. Why doesn't APS just publish the pre-requisites? Seems like a moving target depending on how APS is feeling. |
I meant what they consider algebra ready— to let kids take algebra in 7th grade. I don’t know the cut offs for 6th grade pre algebra. It is absolutely a moving target, & they didn’t advertise they were increasing the required scores until after the fact. |
The numbers quoted were on the placement letters. There was also a cog at cut off of 135 for quantitative. I remember thinking it must be a very tough class. |
Uggg 135 is almost impossible. Is there any flexibility on that? |
We were told that the placement was based on " SOLS, 5th grade Math inventory, and COGAT". But I am not clear at all about how those things are weighted. Also I am not clear at all about how much flexibility the teacher has to make recommendations or if it is 100% based on the scores. Does anyone know? My kid has a very inexperienced teacher who said she had no idea how placement is done when we asked her in the fall. The info we got was from other administrators in the school.
My kid is doing 5th grade math from Beast Academy because he is bored in school and asked for extra math and got a 99% on the COGAT but I am worried that his SOL may not be high enough to qualify him for advanced math (he scored above average last year but I don't remember his score being particularly high) and then I will have to deal with another year of him complaining about being bored... |
I don’t believe they actually talk to the teachers. I think they use the test scores only. But it doesn’t have to be set in stone. If you think your kid should be in a different math class, request a meeting with the middle school math person & say so. |
I think school math is generally easy and boring for any kid who’s done thru Beast Level 5. We do it concurrently with school math as well and there’s no comparison. |
Kids in pre algebra take the 8th grade math SOL, fwiw. |
Very few kids take pre algebra as a sixth grader. It’s ok, they can still take algebra as an eighth grader. Though if it makes you feel better— my daughter had a 140 cogat and near perfect sol. She made the mi cut off when they tested her this past fall. They put her in math 6, it’s been fine. Middle school is such a transition, I’m happy she isn’t super stressed. |
