What’s the illness policy?

My DS has congestion and it isn’t improving. I suspect seasonal allergies. The school says he has to be symptom-free, so I tried looking up the policy on FCPS. This page says it’s ok to send him in.

Symptom-free? That's insane. Colds can last weeks.
In our experience, if they are too snotty they will get sent to the nurse's office and they'll ask you to do a covid test (home is fine) before returning. |

Has he been allergy tested? How does he respond to allergy medication? |

You suspect seasonal allergies? Give him some Allegra or Zyrtec or Flonase. Ask your pediatrician and/or allergist.
Yes, kids with runny noses or congestion can go to school - the school may send them home and require a covid test. Then you have your DC tested, and, if negative, send them back. |

He was tested when he was a toddler. I called to make another appointment, but the earliest date available is May. I’m going to email the principal to see if I can just provide his proof of vaccination and negative test. |

My kid went in with a runny nose today and we haven't received a call.
The symptom free thing is if your kid gets sent home, i think. |

Are you using an allergy medicine? Normally once we give our kid is allergy medicine the symptoms are no longer present. |

People should not have to treat a child or test a child for allergies to prove it’s not covid. This area is insane!!!!! |

We use medicine for allergies because it is not comfortable to be sneezing or have a runny nose all day. The medicine dries up the nose and DS feels better. Bonus, during COVID times it means he doesn’t get sent to the nurse/medic/whatever the person is called these days because they are sneexing or wiping their nose all day. A little bit of Zyrtec or whatever your Doctor suggests for allergies is not going to harm your child. We were doing this before COVID for basic comfort. It’s allergies, use allergy medicine for the time period when the allergies are causing issues. |

| The school has many COVID test kits. Ask to have your kid tested or ask for a test so you can do it yourself. My principal tests kids all the time when there’s a question about symptoms. |

Because allergies are not contagious and are not an illness. Seasonal allergies can be treated pretty easily. |

Kids with allergies should always have allergy medicine. There's no value in being miserable with itchy eyes, congestion, etc. |

Because a regular cold or allergies should not be a reason to keep a kid home. |

Child was tested for allergies and never has had allergies. This is covid, cold or flu. Stay home. |
