A parent told me at a game this weekend that my trapped player will be aged down to 2013 in the Fall 2025. That its now up to the clubs to make the BY/SY decision. Is this accurate?

It is up to the leagues (not clubs) to set a cutoff but no league has announced anything yet and US soccer said there will be no change until 26/27. Now, some clubs might start shuffling teams next year in anticipation of the change, but that is yet to be seen. We will know more in a week. But I think it’s safe to assume ECNL will go to a SY cutoff for 26/27 so your kid will likely be placed with a group of 2012 and 2013s as opposed to just 2012’s.

Can you explain why/how a trapped 2012 will be placed on a team of 2012s and 2013s for 25/26 when it will still be BY registration?

I don’t think that will happen in 25/26. I think the trapped 12 will be on a 12/13 team come 26/27. Too much of a headache for clubs to try and mess with the movement for 25/26. There might be some teams put in a tournament or two that merge 12/13’s next year, but not entire teams for a season.

Others would see it as a developmental year where younger players get a chance to sharpen/improve vs. older/more experienced teams. Clubs already do this in the BY system with top teams, having them play a year up in less competitive leagues.

Maybe I am wrong but it sounded to me that ECNL was ready to pull the trigger if they go the blessing from US Soccer. They are probably still pushing because they can make it happen still. It could be nothing happens but would make for an exciting spring/tryouts if it does.

Our Ecnl team is competing for spots in the national playoffs. I can see our club wanting to eat teams who choose this developmental pathway for lunch.

It makes the most sense for ECNL to allow the switch immediately if US Soccer gives them the blessing

It’s not happening next year. Not sure why people think there is still a chance.

I'm not sure why people who are convinced it is not happening are still on here repeating themselves.

This week is going to be an onslaught of people repeating themselves hoping what they want is true

At the end of this week we will get US Soccer’s guide to the change to SY in 26/27. ECNL will then officially announce their plans to change to SY in 26/27.

By 26/27, the birth year debate will be as irrelevant as the ECNL will be on both the boys and girls sides.

Because sometimes people need to hear things more than once before they understand.

It’s happening. 26/27 ECNL SY registration. What we don’t know is specifics on implementation. Another unknown isn’t GA a going SY too.
