DCPS: Masks Optional the rest of the year

Anonymous
Just sent via WTU:

" Later today, DCPS Chancellor Lewis Ferebee is expected to announce that DCPS will make masks optional for the remainder of the school year. This decision is in alignment with DC Department of Health and Centers for Disease Control (CDC) guidelines.
After learning of the updated Department of Health Guidelines after the Representative Assembly meeting on Tuesday and speaking with Building Representatives across the city, the WTU leadership made the decision to not oppose this decision, but we will remain vigilant. We know that many communities still lag behind in their rates of vaccination and our youngest learners are not yet eligible to be vaccinated. We are continuing to push DCPS to:
• Increase the vaccination rate of all students;
• Continue tracking school and community transmission rates and be ready to pivot back to masks if cases go up especially where vaccination rates are low in accordance with the CDC’s latest guidelines.
• Put protocols in place to ensure students are not shamed for wearing or not wearing masks.
The city also remains obligated to continue to adhere to the protocols and procedures outlined in our MOAs, including COVID testing, monitoring HVAC systems in schools, cleaning protocols, and timely reporting of cases in school communities. We will ensure they meet their obligations to you and our students.
We encourage you to contact your Field Representatives if you have any questions.
In Solidarity,
Jacqueline Pogue Lyons, President
Washington Teachers’ Union"

Hurray!

On a sidenote: What more is *DCPS* supposed to do to encourage vaccinations? That doesn't seem like it's something that DCPS should do. The health dept., sure.

They will be mandated for the next school year, if fully FDA approved by then. Until then, doubt things will change much.

They could do more vaccine clinics at schools, for example.

Newsflash, if a kid hasn't gotten it yet, they aren't getting it now.

But will that DO anything? It seems like the people that aren't getting vaxxed have made their choice. You can get DC to come to your house to vax you, even. If people aren't doing that....then I don't think setting up an ADDITIONAL clinic is going to get people to get vaccinated.

She should find another job then. And read a science book.

Require it for next year. Done.

Yep. I have an aunt and uncle who were teachers and retired early when they were told they had to go back in person rather than "risk" being around our dirty little disease vectors. I am ashamed of them, but at least they didn't pull this shit.

Get a grip or get a new job.

Maybe the abolishment of the mask mandate, some will reconsider.

Not sure what difference that would make. The problem isn’t lack of access to vaccines. You’d still need parents to consent to getting their kids vaccinated.

And lose 50% of the student body? Yeah, right.
