Everything is so expensive and it’s cheaper to go to Europe! |
It’s a completely different experience. Hawaii is technically part of Oceania. It’s a tropical archipelago with many of the microclimates of the world in one place. I would definitely not say it is overrated, but it may not be for everyone depending on what you like to do on vacation. |
Totally agree. We went to Hawaii last summer and loved it. The Big Island has 8 of 13 climate zones, so you can see lots of different topography from volcanoes to rainforests. |
Beaches in europe suck |
With all the ridiculous COVID restrictions, yes.
Otherwise, no. It's incredible/otherworldly. and I am not a beach person. |
I think Hawaii wants you to leave them alone right now. |
How weird to compare it to Europe lol |
Not true after March 26. https://www.washingtonpost.com/travel/2022/03/02/hawaii-safe-travels-covid-restrictions/ Waikiki Beach is overrated. Other parts of Oahu were worth it. Kauai was much better still. Definitely a must return location. Plan to combine Kauai with Maui (instead of Oahu) on next visit. |
We were just there. It was refreshing how people just wore masks inside without any complaint or fuss, and otherwise just went about their business. Really no “ridiculous COVID restrictions” at all. I was glad everyone had to be vaccinated or tested in order to go. Makes sense and isn’t different from going to Europe or returning to the US in that area. |
Not the OP, but I don’t think they’re so much comparing them as deciding which so-called “must visit” locale is worth their vacation money right now. Many (most?) people might get one big trip a year, if that. Don’t know what you’re lol’ing about. |
Speak for yourself. I love waikiki. Much more fun than Maui and Big Island. |
Yes it is for unsophisticated tourist. |
Then go to Europe. We went to Maui last summer and have visited Kauai in the past and think it was worth it. But it all depends on what you want to do on vacation. If you just want to stay at a nice resort, never leave the resort grounds and enjoy a nice pool then, no, Hawaii is not worth and it's much better to go to Mexico, the Caribbean or even Florida. Do you want to check out big cities and museums, then sure, Europe is a better bet and use of your money. Do you love beautiful sunsets, snorkeling, surfing, hiking, swimming near waterfalls, near perfect weather every day, then Hawaii may be worth it but you could also get most of this at other places as well. |
They are completely different vacations. It makes no sense to compare those two locations to each other. |
if you spend your vacations visit what are on other people's "must visit" lists, then I guess you could end up disappointed by anything. If you start with what you like to do and see and what is doable on your budget, you will likely have more fun. I am planning a trip to Hawaii now. I have been to Europe many times and while I do think that my kids could enjoy it, I have no desire to take them there because that I would like to do in Europe does not really overlap with what they would like to do. But in Hawaii we will all want to do the same thing (snorkel, zip line, bike rides etc). |
