Pleasantly surprised by Duran's proposed budget

Glad that he's trying to reverse the class size increases that the SB approved in the last couple years and bring us back to something reasonable.

It's not going to last. They're able to do this because of the additional money available this year. A few more years when budgets tighten again, class size will be back on the table. People don't realize how much all the salary increases along with having to hire the necessary staff to ensure those small class sizes cost and will increase over the years.

Yes, and all the new development going is going to cause major increase to enrollment. Even if we have budget to decrease class sizes, we don't have the space. APS is a mediocre school district but will soon be just like Alexandria.

His presentation forecasts no rise in enrollment over the next few years.

Can we just note that crazy ventilation lady commented on anxious union teacher's post about it--all in hysterics about how unsatisfactory it was because it didn't have oodles of money dedicated to ventilation and masks? In all seriousness, if someone knows these two in real life, you should 100% ensure that they are connected to good therapists and psychiatrists.

Yes, I'm being petty and slightly off topic, but, these two are just off the anxiety charts.

Many of us aren't on AEM so we don't know what you are talking about- I'm assuming that's what you are referencing.

Yes, it is. Here's a brief synopsis with some direct quotes:

Anxious teacher: (with link to proposed budget) "Proposed budget is up....here we go... first got (sic) take is excitement".

Crazy Ventilation Lady: "What's to be excited about? I don't see a damn dollar for air quality or better masks. Anywhere.(........more hysteria...........) But we are SUPER KIDDING OURSELVES if we think COVID is over. (..........more hysteria.........)"

She then proceeds to leave like five more comments on the deplorable situation.

NP. I wish she would create her own FB group. She overwhelms conversations and takes away from the group. I used to find nice helpful information on that site but with people like her, I don't visit as much anymore. Such a shame.

If it helps, every teacher I know is a fan of the budget right now and would 100% rather have money spent on lowering class sizes and fixing the pay scale/restoring steps to veteran teachers. I don't know any teacher that wants precious APS funds spent on air quality or masks.

Those posts were hysterical. We need to normalize wearing N95 masks, and that was what should be in the budget... Right here folks. Here is where we see people who want to ensure children stay in masks forever.

Ok Debbie Downer, in absence of Duran personally being able to halt multifamily housing development or eliminate the burnout teachers have experienced over the last couple years.... what would you propose the budget look like?

+1 restoring steps and increasing pay while lowering class size will help stop the bleeding and keep teachers in our district next year. We need this

APS Parent and Teacher here....this is a really strong budget and I can tell you that teachers are happy. We need good teachers to stay. The cost of living in Arlington is out of control and there is really no incentive to commute here without competitive pay and a clear path to keep increasing your salary.

I’m so glad I finally muted her.

I'm an APS parent and totally agree! Glad you're satisfied.
