When did parent teacher conference days become teacher vacation days?

Anonymous
Does anyone notice how teachers aren't available for conferences on the actual parent teacher conference calendar days? Just a bunch of mornings/evenings before and after...

Why even have PTC days on the calendar?
Anonymous
Consider them flex days. They don’t owe you that time before / after.

Yes I’ve noticed but honestly, I’d rather do it a random day at 4 after school and use those days for a vacation. So many people go to Disney or other vacation those days anyway.

Which district has scheduled conference days on the calendar?

APS always does.

OP, we have never had that issue.

APS does - how do other districts handle it?

Don't they owe us the PTC days? Wouldn't it be part of the contract?

APS does but our elementary teachers have always been super flexible partly because they know it is tough for working parents to come to school for a random 20min in the middle of the day.

If they are willing to space it out and stay late on other days that’s a win for everyone.

They are doing them but flex. If they weren’t flex PTC days - they wouldn’t otherwise owe you the conference time they are offering you.

Dear lord, teachers can’t win. They take off a school day and people complain their child had a sub. They take off on a day they don’t have to prep lesson plans (and still offer the conferences!) and people complain then too.

Teachers are allowed to use their personal time off. If you want to meet with them find a time that works for both of your scheduless.

It's cute that you think teachers are taking these days off using personal leave.

We don't have this issue in FCC. The teachers publish a calendar with meeting times every 15 minutes (or shorter if it's HS/middle school) and parents sign up for the time slot they want.

Fairfax doesn't have scheduled conference dates.

I had a 30-minute phone call with one of my child’s APS middle school teachers on a weeknight before the last conference day.

I appreciate the fact that this teacher was willing to accommodate my schedule, and it was a productive and positive conversation.

I thought this was great, and it seems like a way to accommodate the realities of scheduling for many families.

Yes I've noticed and as long as they hold conferences at some point, they are flexing their time and what do you care.
