Hello,
We are considering a move from Howard County to Frederick. We're mostly looking in the Monrovia (Landsdale community) or New Market, Ijamsville areas. I am hoping someone on here may live in the area and can share your experiences with the schools. Many think we're silly for leaving HoCo but I'm looking for a different vibe for our family and we're quickly getting priced out of SFH here. I'm trying to do as much research as possible before we make a decision. We're looking for good schools. I'm not looking for best of the best. I want my children to be in a supportive environment where teachers care about them. I understand this area may not be as diverse as Howard County but we're looking for a school and community where people are accepting of all types of people. I read a prior post about someone saying she would never send her child to Green Valley ES or Windsor Knolls because her AA child wouldn't be accepted. Is that true of this area or is that just one poster's feelings? If you have children in the schools in these areas, how do you like them? I'd love to know what you DON'T like about the schools too. Thank you for any information you can share. |
Wow. I'm really surprised to hear that. My DS is in 7th grade at Windsor Knolls and two of his best friends are AA. I obviously don't see the day to day interactions that happen at the school, but his group of friends is a diverse mix of background and they are basically just 12/13 year old boys. The only thing I'll add is that we have only been here about 2 years, and we came from MoCo. So, maybe my DS was just used to having a diverse group of friends and seeked that out without thinking? But we haven't noticed anything of the sort |
| While the schools in that area of Frederick County aren't the most diverse in the county, the area tends to be more liberal. I'm not familiar with ES and MS, but the high schools (e.g., Urbana, Oakdale) would seem to be more accepting than a school like Brunswick. |
| OP here. Thank you. This is reassuring to hear. |
| DP here. Does anyone have any experience with Linganore high school? |
| Well for what it’s worth there was just an incident at Middletown Middle School where 3 students were charged for hate crimes against black students … |
Yes. Absolutely Horrible. but FWIW, Southern Frederick compared to the rest of the county is like NoVa to the rest of the state. Night and day difference |
+1 I bought in Middletown and wish I had bought in New Market. |
Linganore HS is not diverse at all. They have some, more like a few black kids but from my kid's experience (currently at that school), the black kids for the most part keep to themselves. There are also no black teachers. There are definitely some covert racist attitudes that are held by some students (and perhaps staff). We're not black but are looking to transfer our kid to Urbana. I just don't want my kid to be in that environment. It might get better in the future since Windsor Knolls is getting a bit more diverse, however a lot of the kids there are going to Urbana HS. |
| May not be as helpful, but our K is in one of the lottery charter schools (MVMPCS) that pulls from the whole county. Because if this, it tends to be very diverse. We also live in Frederick City, which tends to be more liberal / diverse than further out areas of the county. Other DC is 3 yo and in a (not inexpensive) daycare center in Frederick City, and also very diverse. |
How do you like this school? We are looking at applying for our DD. |
| If you want something other than lily White then Linganore wouldn’t work. I’d go to Urbana instead. Also Linganore is often in local news for things like shouting racist #%^* at basketball games. |
| North of Frederick is hardcore Trumpy areas. Urbana, Linganore, and to a lesser extent Middletown are full of people who will vote R usually but won’t vote for Trump. |
Linganore is 83.4% white, 2.4% black, and 1.7% Asian. Landsdale community which is pretty diverse feeds into it but a lot of the families there currently have young kids who are still at elementary school. At some point, Linganore will slowly become a bit more diverse but for the most part, the kids attending that high school are outside of Landsdale, meaning it will still be majority white.. and very Republican given the communities they are coming from. |
Hmm, I thought Landsdale fed into Urbana? Is that a recent change? |
