I cooked some bacon yesterday, which is a rarity in our house.
Saved the grease and I’m thinking I’ll use it for a wilted spinach salad, and cooking some green beans and Brussels sprouts. Other good ideas I’m not thinking of? Thanks in advance. |
| Do you really want to eat that grease? |
| German potato salad. |
| You can use it to flavor greens. To make black eyed peas. In cornbread. To grease a skillet for eggs. Use it to make biscuits. Add to mashed potatoes. So many others. I’m guessing you are not a southern cook. We use bacon grease in just about everything. ❤️ |
| I dip it in stale bread and feed it to the crows and squirrels that visit my huge yard. I only hope that they wont get heart attack in the future. The squirrels are so obese now that they look like cartoon characters with puffy cheeks and rolls of fat. |
lol - yep, same here. I was aghast when I first heard about bacon jars from my Southern DH, but I’m on board now. Makes a yummy grilled cheese sandwich. Mmmmm. |
| Stick it in the fridge, there’s no need to use it right away. |
Best answer. Lots of vinegar. |
OP and yes, thank you! Love it but have never made it myself. And to the PP who asked if I truly want to eat it? Bless your heart.

Another not yet mentioned: bacon grease focaccia to have with your wilted greens. |
This recipe always results in bowls being licked clean: https://www.washingtonpost.com/recipes/german-potato-salad/7098/ |

Like another PP, I’d make suet balls or cakes - add some barley, oats and or seeds and place in a bird feeder.
I’m a vegetarian, BTW. |
| Yeah I always put it in the fridge to save for frying things—seems so wasteful that we used to throw it out and then use canola oil in its place! No wonder our planet is in the shithole when we just toss things that way. |
Don’t you worry about rats? |
This. I use a teaspoon here and there to flavor beans or greens, add to soups, cook eggs…you can substitute it for part of the cooking fat in any recipe. Use less then you think til used to utilizing. |
