Natalie Portman

Settle a debate between my partner and me. I think that, in the mid-00s, Natalie Portman was kind of smug and okay with the media tearing down other women at her expense. He claims that she wasn't. Your thoughts, please.

She was. Smart and pretty. But smug.

All I know is that my friend went to Harvard when she did, and said she was very taken with herself, had the attitude of "don't you know who I am?" around the Boston bars.

I am not a huge Portman fan and can see how she comes across as smug. BUT I also have no idea what you are talking about specifically regarding tearing down other women? Can you be more specific?

She’s been successful from a very young age and remained A-list ever since so it’s not hard to imagine her being full of herself.

Not certain what you mean.

Yeah, like Mayim Bialik but not as wretched. Basically she was lauded as 'the smart one who doesn't show off her body/takes 'smart roles''... and was late to the me too movement.

Rose McGowan summed it up best when she eyerolled at her wearing the dress with female film maker names on it:

“the kind of protest that gets rave reviews from the mainstream media” but was “more like an actress acting the part of someone who cares. As so many of them do.”

She FINALLY came out re: early sexualization when she was a kid starting out in movies. I remember seeing 'the professional' as a kid myself at the time and thinking 'holy inappropriate'...Think: had you ever heard her raise this issue/try to prevent other younger actors/kids from being sexualized prior to WAAAAAY after me too? Nope. She's late enough to the game- I know everyone walks their personal journey and she may have needed all those years to come to terms with herself... but I don't think she is less of a jerk.

I mean, isn’t that the behavior of many 20 year olds at prestigious schools?

Well, if your friend reported this, then it MUST be true.

Smug then, smug now.

What's your beef, OP? She was in her 20's in the 2000's.
I hope people don't hold what I said in my 20's against me now.
How is she now? Humans do learn.

Oh come on.

She was a famous actress.

Of course a 20 year old is going to show off when she’s out drinking with friends. The difference with talking shit is that it’s funny when it’s your friends and obnoxious when it’s notq.

She seems smug in her roles, so this would not surprise me. I don’t enjoy her acting.
