Your child's experience w dental crown

Anonymous
Can anyone please share their experiences w their child getting a stainless steel crown on their primary molar? My 5 yr old daughter is being recommended to have a crown placed due to having 2 separate cavities on one tooth. How was the experience for you and your child, and does your child feel self conscious or get teased? I know it's supposed to be not as visible but it's the first molar towards the front so probably still noticeable. Our dentist is willing to do fillings but cautioned that they could fail after a while/more risk than a crown. No guarantees basically since it needs to stay for 6 more years approximately. Any helpful advice or thoughts appreciated!

It's painless. You can ask to pay extra for a tooth colored crown.

This dentist only will do the Stainless Steel for molars he said. The tooth colored ones often require root canals he said.

I have a crown that is tooth colored and no root canal. I don't think that's right.

You are an adult. Completely different situation.

I am also surprised your dentist will only do stainless steel instead of tooth colored. I didn't even know they still do stainless steel crowns/fillings. All of my recent ones within last 15 years have been tooth colored.

Nevermind. I didn't read the last post from the dentist. I guess it is different from child to adult.

My DD got a crown at 15, so clearly not the same age. But even then she was freaked out by the large novocaine needle. You might want to check with the dentist on what the needle will look like. I think pediatric dentists sometimes try to hide it with their hand so kids can't see.

I guess she was old enough to get the tooth-colored one, although she says it feels different than her other molars.

My daughter had one when she was young. It was stainless and you could see it. I think they do stainless bc it lasts and is very durable. They gave her some type of sedative like drink then numbed the area. It was fine. I was very nervous and felt like a bad mom for this happening. In all honesty, the time will pass quickly and the adult teeth will come in and it will be a distant memory. Plenty of kids have crowns. Try to make a commitment to flossing if that played a part. My child has healthy adult teeth and all is well.

Yes we have been flossing from early on. Ugh!

My daughter (9) got one- and she thinks it’s color- calls it her pirate tooth. I definitely worried about it a lot more than she has. I know it will fall out in a couple years and the dentist said it’s the best option so trusted them!

Ok good to hear. Thank you! I would prefer the fillings but I don't want to then possibly subject my child to more dental issues if they don't last 6 years. 😕 White crown would be preferable but not an option in going the crown route.

My 8 yo got a stainless steel crown about a year ago. The alternative was an extraction. She definitely experienced pain/soreness during & after the procedure from the shots & probing. But she was fine the next day & it’s been fine. We do have to be sure no food gets stuck. A water pic helps.

Ok good to know. Did your daughter have the nitrous/laughing gas?
