Now you wouldn't believe me if I told you, but I could run like the wind blows. From that day on, if I was ever going somewhere, I was running!

DS is 13. He ran cross country in the fall and does a couple of running days per week. Usually one 3 mile run and the other day is sprint work. DH is a serious runner, so they head to the track together. Sometimes we all go. It’s a nice family activity.

My older DS plays D1 soccer. The amount of off-season running they do is ridiculous, IMO, and many kids get injured. Running definitely helps with soccer fitness, but you have to be careful to avoid overuse injuries, and a serious stretching routine is hugely important.

None.
Either you are athletic or not.
You can improve speed by maybe 5% at best
Endurance is another story but soccer is not a steady state tempo run.

How much running is done at your practices? My kids coach does a lot of running at practices also uses it as punishment quite a bit. This completely annoys me as I’m paying for the coach to train soccer not fitness. Curious what other teams do. This is an ECNL team, so especially curious for those teams they f this is a norm

If they are out of shape then it limits what they can do on the pitch, and doing fitness in training also gives coaches control and actual data points on who is/has done what to be soccer fit.
If the players are knuckleheads and further wasting everyone's time and money, additional running is one way to get across: is it worth it?

Clubs at all levels all over the world oversee some kind of fitness in "training", just as they do in other sports, too.

my kid is just finishing up their playing career and while I will miss it the only work they did outside of practice was the summer before high school tryouts because they put the fear into the kids about being in shape. They soon find out it is just talk.

Like someone else said, either you are an athlete with a mindset or you are not. I don't think they were ever out of shape because they are pretty active all the time.

Depends on the club. Some ECNL clubs are all about fitness(my dd told me she was getting 5-10 touches at practice we moved clubs). The coach believed fitness and speed wins. Other clubs incorporated fitness into training with game like drills and the ball- short burst, jog, burst, jog, burst with ball or trying to win the ball. All drills are alway opposed- ie one player or group of players run the drill, the other player or group of players try to win the ball. There are good and bad coaches in the ECNL. They just have a higher level of athleticism in the ECNL not great coaching or some magical technical training techniques.

None. But I just signed us all up for a 5k and will be doing one together every month. I hope this inspires more out of practice running. I enjoy it and would love my kids to join me.

This is not entirely true. I do agree much of improved speed is endurance. We have a brilliantly fast girl on our team who peters out in the 2nd half all the time. You can improve sprinting speed and while I agree part of it is natural athleticism, a good part of speed (in the 2nd half especially) is really endurance.

DD plays in Maryland. During high school season (mid August to November), she does not do extra running since they practice 5x times a week. The rest of the year, when her club is practicing 3 times a week, she tries to run 3 miles twice a week. She usually scales back if it's a week where they have a showcase or multiple games. In July, her off month, she runs 3 days a week and does strength training or flexibility the other days.

Nothing is entirely true if you parse it.
There is speed and endurance. You can train to do more intervals at speed and consider it endurance. Speed loss in a 2nd half or anytime based on fatigue in a soccer game is primarily mental unless the athlete is grossly out of shape in which case both speed and endurance benefit from training

I was giving athletes the benefit by treating them as in shape. Yours may not be.
