While the media likes to portray angry January 6th rioter types, I would assume that most right wingers should be blissfully happy about the state of the world, no? Republicans are poised for massive gains in 2022, and soon enough, you'll be rid of doddering old "Brandon."
I'm a leftist. I don't even call myself a liberal, I'm politically somewhere between Bernie Sanders, Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich, and Brazilian ex-and-hopefully-soon-to-be president Lula. And I'm angry. While I'm a chill person day to day, the overall state of the world makes my blood boil. The planet is dying. Capitalism run amok has made a farce of the middle class and has generated an oligarchic elite taking space vacations while even middle class people worry about unexpected expenses of $500 or more, let alone the actual working poor. We completely botched the pandemic, and we are woefully incapable of handling future pandemics, our healthcare system is a travesty, but anyways - I digress - the point is, I am so pessimistic about the future. There are days when I believe a better world is possible, and then most days I think we are completely, irrevocably, F***d. That's my world view, as a leftist. As a conservative, are you happy? None of Biden's "liberal" agenda is going through. No action is being taken on climate change and other countries as well as the US are sliding towards "living with" the pandemic. Nothing is being done to rein in corporate rule, and rich people can get away with as much as they want. I have tried to introduce myself to the opposing view. I've read Stephen Pinker, who believes that the world is more prosperous and peaceful than it has ever been. I've read Jordan Peterson, who wants to be a long-lost Dad for lonely conservative men. I can entertain the idea that things may not necessarily be worse, so much as mass media exposes us to everything that is going on and we're on overdrive. There are many, many reasons why I don't buy these arguments, and many other things that I believe have screwed us all, but as a conservative, you must think this is all pretty grand, right? Are you optimistic about the future? |
Conservatives won't be happy until there are about 1000 global uber-elite with the rest of the world's population is in servitude to their whims. Think the most dystopian future view of a dying planet with the masses in tatters while these Oligarhcs feast on the blood and sweat of their fellow man.
There is really no other way I can conceive of what the autocratic, right wing future view is. There is nothing they do from a policy standpoint but make way for it. |
Just some advice, OP.
You need a change of scenery. You need to get out of the DC area and spend some time away from big cities. And, stop feeding your paranoia. Yeah - inflation is an issue and international relations are on a "down swing." The virus is here to stay. Crime is up in big cities. Times are tough. As a conservative, living in a rural area, I am optimistic. I am also old enough to have seen our nation, and the world, go through a lot of crap. Things are not as bad as you seem to think. |
So there ya go folks! The reason why conservatives don’t care is because they have removed themselves from civilization and think that they are an island. The reason they are conservative in the first place is because they don’t see the connection between the masses and their own isolated world. Well, what a surprise it will be when even their rural christian white people communities collapse under the weight of climate change. Just give it enough time and they too will have nowhere left to hide. Deep down they know this, hence the recent capitalist fixation on space travel lol. |
PP here. LOL at the bolded. Thinking that living in a rural area is "removing <oneself> from civilization" proves to me that you definitely need to get out and travel around the US. |
Are you posting this from an eco-friendly bunker? |
Well, I don’t feel optimistic about many forever blue cities where violent crime is surging and parents have far weightier concerns than choosing which “top rated” cloth mask to buy for their kids. |
LOL all you want but that is literally the definition of civilization. Sorry it stings. |
OP, I am a progressive and have to say that I can tell you’re simply an unhappy, angry person. It’s not your politics, it’s you. You like to hear yourself talk and are probably a very smug bore. Don’t lump all progressives into being as miserable as you. Seek therapy. |
Wow. You are proving that you are not only clueless and ignorant, but you are also quite elitist and arrogant. |
There's been plenty of studies showing conservatives are happier than liberals. The progressive response is to usually sneer that conservatives are happier because they are content to be ignorant and ignore the suffering and pains of others. When you look at the actual data for why conservatives are happier it's because they have stronger networks of family and friends, including being part of faith organizations or living in smaller town settings where people look after each other.
I do agree the progressive mindset is trapped by its blind belief in the proper inevitability of the right side of history, and when it fails to happen, they get frustrated and unhappy. It's a classic metaphysical concept studied in political theory and one that has dominated the left in its various guises and results in an environment where things are never, ever good enough and there always needs to be a new battle to be fought. We do see this with wokery. Despite the staggering improvement in the wellbeing, material and political, of African Americans since the 1950s, progressives still go around acting as if nothing has changed since, well, 1860. I suppose the conservative mindset is more realistic. |
You aren't going to be so optimistic when there is less clean air and clean water and when there aren't customers to fill the orders for the food you are growing in your rural area both foreign and domestic. |
When we see the rise of authoritarianism both at home and abroad, and 35% of the country is happy about it, then we know there is a lot of ignorance. |
OP doesn't seem to have studied any history. He/she also almost certainly has not read anything Jordan Peterson has written beyond quotes in news articles or soundbites in short videos.
Anyway, my recommendation for the OP is to find a place with the type of government and social structure that he/she thinks is more conducive to a propsperous/healthy/optimistic future, and go experience it for 3 to 6 months. Perspective is a wonderful thing. |
Rural conservatives didn't move there, they didn't remove themselves. They were left behind. Anyone with bigger ideas and wanting more opportunities leaves rural America. |
