The job would be 5 hours per day and duties would include:
--family laundry (no bed linens/making beds), including putting away the kids' clothes --taking dogs to the backyard and/or on a walk 1-2 times during the 5 hours --prepping fruits & vegetables for kid lunches --vacuuming the main level of our home daily, upstairs level once per week --prepping simple dinners, possibly cooking on some days (prep and put into crockpot/instapot) depending on the person's comfort level with that --general tidying on our main level, organize toys as needed --wash dog bowls, give them fresh water --wipe down kitchen counters daily --filling handsoap dispensers in kitchen and bathrooms --errands like the drycleaner Of the 5 hours, about 3 hours would be available to do the above tasks. The last 2 hours would involve picking up two elementary-school-age kids and either bringing them home or taking them to an activity once per week. I do realize that this is the purple unicorn as many, many families want the above set-up so the candidates are in high demand. If you have found a purple unicorn, what do you pay? |
This is an 8 hour a day job. |
1-2 dog walks (presumably 15-30 minutes?) per 5 hour shift, but only 3 hours are available to do that? Why do your dogs need two walks in 3 hours? And still accomplish everything else in 5 hours? You want the same core 2 hours after school as everyone else. You want to add 15 hours of housework… But that’s still not full time wages. This is a part-time position that won’t be attractive to anyone. Students aren’t available for those hours. Most nannies want full time. Most nannies don’t want to do your housework. I guess you could advertise at $36-40/hour? Offer a full time rate for part time hours, see how much longevity you get? |
$30-35hr |
No, it’s not. I think 5 is about right. I would advertise $30-$35/hour. |
Lol, we have a his but pick up and to school for the kids for about 18/hour live in |
But we have a cleaners do the cleaning |
You want someone to cook your dinner, straighten your main floor, walk multiple dogs twice, and fold your laundry in 3 hours? Are you kidding? |
OP here, I was thinking something in the $30-$35/hour range. And yes, I think the hours are correct. I figure if the person takes the dogs on a walk when she arrives at 12, she would then let them out right before 3:00 before going to pick up the kids. Many of the tasks would not be daily (such as laundry, which we would also do ourselves as needed and on weekends).
Daily tasks: Arrive, take dogs on a 15-minute walk: 20 minutes Vacuum main level (one big area), unload dishwasher, wipe down kitchen counters if necessary: 30 minutes Cut fruits & vegetables for kid lunches and dinner: 30 minutes Let dogs outside before leaving to pick up the kids: 10 minutes Tasks that would vary on a daily basis depending on needs and time: general tidying, laundry, vacuuming bedroom level, wash dog bowls, fill handsoap dispensers, drop off dry cleaning: remaining 1 hour, 30 minutes I have done this job before and it's doable (I'm a former nanny whose job evolved when the kids I cared for got older, and I was more than happy to do similar tasks and remain employed with the family). |
You realize you just timed all this out and it came to exactly 3 hours and you forgot the most time intensive part - COOKING DINNER FOR A FAMILY - in that time? |
This. $25-35 an hour plus a car. |
In my OP I said possibly cooking. It would depend on the person's interest/comfort level in doing that and I would be happy to add on more time. Dinner prep is included in my calculations, then DH or I can cook when we get home. It could also come out of the non-daily tasks bucket and other tasks could be sacrificed. Essentially, we are flexible depending on the person's strengths and interests. |
This is not an 8-hour-a-day job. I'm the OP and as I mentioned, I have done this exact job in the past and it was not difficult. Also, our long-time nanny works these hours for us two days per week and she has plenty of time for tasks before going to pick up the kids. She finds things to do around the house and is very helpful (including preparing dinner for the kids), we are happy with our set-up. However, if starting over for someone to help with stuff around the house and minimal childcare, we would look for someone with the above-mentioned list of tasks in mind. Our nanny retired right before the pandemic so she could travel, but since Covid threw a wrench in her plans she came back to us full-time and has since evolved to part-time. She is really hoping to be able to resume her travel plans later this year. |
Hi OP, I had a similar position 10+ years ago. I was paid $300 week for 20 hours. I agree that it's not an 8 hour a day job and can definitely be done in 5 hours. Today, I would take a position like this for $30/hr, so $600 week guaranteed, meaning I'm compensated whether or not I'm needed. Good luck! |
Oops, *$30/hr, $750 a week. |
