| Is GC a better choice than public school for HS? MCPS is falling apart. |
A friend of mine sent her son there + he liked it. She is super rich so the kid could have gone anywhere. He transferred there to play football. It is economically + ethnically diverse. Catholic School. Good luck with your choice. |
+1 I have a friend there as well and they love it. (Their child is not in the football program). |

I've got a 9th grader there. I'm not sure how it compares to MCPS because we always planned on sending our kids to Catholic school. It's large enough that your child will find their place with kids with similar interests. My 9th grader is very happy there and we've been happy with how the school communicates. You're too late for applications for 2022-23, but check out the admissions portion of the webpage, plan on attending an open house in the fall, and follow them on social media.

Tuition is off the rails. 27+K? Thousands more (~ 5 thousand?) than even SJC, right? They're in a monied area and they know it. Let's be honest. What HHI qualifies for aid? Lets say to bring it down to 17K? Anyone know? Even pretty well off Catholic families with 3 or 4 kids are going to choke on 27K when HS rolls around. |
One thing to keep in mind about GC versus SJC is that GC includes lunch and books in tuition. Also, if your child has learning differences, the Ryken program is included in tuition versus SJC’s Benilde program which is an additional $3500. I can’t say what the HHI is for aid, but most of the people I know that qualified for aid only got $5k per kid. A young woman I know at AHC received almost 3x the aid and scholarships to AHC than she did GC. |
Yes the all you can eat lunch is worth a lot for my athletic son. He loved his shadow day there. |
Thanks for the info. Anyone know what the general annual fee for lunch and books is, for Catholic schools? |
IME, about $2500 total. |
| I can't tell you whether it's worth the cost to your family, but I have a junior at GC and we are very happy with the school. It feels like a much smaller school than it is when it comes to personal attention and class size. There are a number of scholarship opportunities in academics and the arts. |
| We have two friends who sent their kids there. Both are current seniors and have a very positive experience. |
| Better than the local MCPS but not better than the other Catholic high schools in the area. |
Just as good as the other Catholic high schools in the area. |
Good Counsel should be ashamed of itself. They sent a letter to my daughter claiming they saw her playing lacrosse. They did not. They lied to generate interest. This is the tackiest thing I have ever seen done in high school admissions. It was the tipping point of our deciding not to go forward with the application. Some text from the letter: "As lacrosse players, this email is to inform you that one of our coaches or myself has seen your daughter play and we are extremely interested in helping her become a FALCON!
