Low iron while pregnant

Anonymous
I’m 16 weeks and have been losing tons of hair over the last few weeks. My TSH and full thyroid panel is completely normal as well as vitamin d and B12 but my ferritin came back at a 10.4 today which is very low. Obviously I most likely need iron supplements but can low ferritin really cause excessive hair loss? Planning on chatting with my endocrinologist tomorrow but curious if anyone else has dealt with this.

Yes

Try Floradix. It’s pretty gentle and don’t taste that bad.

Yes, make all meals in a cast iron pan and put iron rich foods with vitamin c rich foods, like a spinach omelet.

Interesting. I use a cast iron since I used to be a whiny vegan and never bothered with prenatals and never had low iron through 2 complete pregnancies.

I had extremely low iron in college (ferritin of 1, not pregnant) and I absolutely had trouble with my hair falling out until I got my iron up.

Thanks for letting me know!! Seems like this is definitely probably the reason. Everyone says your hair is so nice and healthy during pregnancy but 100% not the case for me!

Can you give me some examples? I don’t eat red meat and hate seafood so I’m definitely struggling! I do eat eggs every day with turkey bacon but obviously that’s not doing anything.

Yes, low iron can definitely cause hair loss. I take Vitron C.

Literally just cook in a cast iron frying pan. If you add something acidic (e.g. tomato) more iron will dissolve into the food. Chase it down with vitamin C for better absorption. My cast iron sometimes leaves full out metalic streaks on my eggs. Spinach is a good veggie iron source.

Be aware that iron supplements can cause constipation. Squatty Potty helps immensely!

I never had low iron in pregnancy despite eating vegetarian/pescatarian (I normally eat meat but it turned my stomach when i was preg). I used Nature Made prenatals so I think that helped keep it up.

Make sure you're taking the prenatals with iron. SO many have no iron (because it can make pregnant women nauseous). I have a cast iron stomach and never had a problem with iron. I was told that my high energy levels were because I had such good iron levels.

+1 to Floradix. I used that during 2 pregnancies to counteract pregnancy-induced anemia. It doesn’t cause the constipation issues so prevalent with other forms of iron.

Op here: I’ve been taking the Naturelo brand prenatals since TTC and they say they have iron but maybe not enough? Waiting for my endo to call and tell me his thoughts!
